{"id":37040,"date":"2026-03-10T16:51:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T16:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/37040\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T16:51:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T16:51:11","slug":"kurdish-journalist-indicted-in-turkey-over-news-reports-social-media-posts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/37040\/","title":{"rendered":"Kurdish journalist indicted in Turkey over news reports, social media posts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Nedim-Oruc.jpg\" data-caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"690\" height=\"390\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- alt=\"\" title=\"Nedim Oruc\u0327\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Nedim-Oruc.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"690\" height=\"390\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Nedim-Oruc.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Nedim Oruc\u0327\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Turkish prosecutors have indicted journalist Nedim Oru\u00e7 from the pro-Kurdish Ajansa Welat news agency on terrorism-related charges over his reporting and social media posts, the Free Press Monitor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepressmonitor.org\/2026\/03\/10\/gazeteci-nedim-oruc-hakkinda-iddianame\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u015e\u0131rnak Chief Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office accuses Oru\u00e7 of multiple offenses, including disseminating terrorist propaganda, concealing his identity during demonstrations, unlawful possession of dangerous materials and obstructing the performance of official duties.<\/p>\n<p>Oru\u00e7 was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/turkish-court-orders-arrest-of-kurdish-journalist-on-terrorism-charges\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrested<\/a>\u00a0on January 19 after being <a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/turkey-extends-custody-of-kurdish-journalist-detained-while-reporting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detained<\/a> while covering demonstrations in the Cizre district of \u015e\u0131rnak province, where residents were protesting attacks on Kurdish neighborhoods in the Syrian city of Aleppo.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence cited in the indictment included footage he recorded while covering the January 14 demonstrations showing armored vehicles; his coverage of a ceremony in Kandil, Iraq, where the outlawed Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/turkce\/articles\/c629ymv700jo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a>\u00a0its withdrawal from Turkey on October 26, 2025; his reporting on damaged cemeteries of PKK militants and his social media posts. Prosecutors also cited his fingerprints found on a banned magazine during a 2016 raid on the pro-Kurdish Peoples\u2019 Democratic Party\u2019s (HDP) office in Cizre.<\/p>\n<p>The \u015e\u0131rnak 1st High Criminal Court has accepted the indictment, with the first hearing scheduled for April 24.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey frequently brings terrorism-related charges against journalists and media workers, most commonly alleging links to the outlawed PKK, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey and its Western allies.<\/p>\n<p>Press freedom and human rights groups say such cases often rely on reporting activity, sources or published content rather than evidence of involvement in violence and are used to deter critical coverage of the Kurdish issue.<\/p>\n<p>The Kurdish issue, a term prevalent in Turkey\u2019s public discourse, refers to the demand for equal rights by the country\u2019s Kurdish population and their struggle for recognition. <\/p>\n<p>According to Expression Interrupted, a press freedom monitoring group, 27 journalists\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/expressioninterrupted.com\/tr\/liste.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are<\/a>\u00a0currently behind bars in Turkey.
