A Turkish court sentenced jailed journalist Enver Aysever to 10 months in prison on Thursday for \u201cinciting hatred and enmity\u201d due to remarks he made in criticism of right-wing ideology but ordered his release after suspending the sentence, Turkish Minute<\/a> reported, citing the Anka news agency.<\/p>\n

Aysever, 54, had been in pretrial detention since December 11, when he was\u00a0arrested<\/a>\u00a0following comments criticizing right-wing ideology.<\/p>\n

The trial was held at the K\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck\u00e7ekmece 30th Criminal Court of First Instance in \u0130stanbul. The court sentenced Aysever to 10 months in prison but postponed the sentence and ruled for his release.<\/p>\n

The case stemmed from a livestream in which Aysever responded to remarks by Hasan \u0130mamo\u011flu, the father of jailed \u0130stanbul Mayor Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the S\u00f6zc\u00fc newspaper in December, the elder \u0130mamo\u011flu said he regretted having fought communism throughout his life, claiming that there is no need for communism to threaten property rights.<\/p>\n

He made the remarks while criticizing the government\u2019s\u00a0seizure<\/a>\u00a0of his family\u2019s assets following his son\u2019s arrest. Many see the corruption probe targeting the \u0130stanbul Municipality as politically motivated.<\/p>\n

During a broadcast on his YouTube channel, Aysever criticized those comments and said: \u201cBeing right-wing is a crime. When you are right-wing, you become immoral. \u2026 A person with a conscience is left-wing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aysever, who has more than 280,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel, was detained following a criminal investigation launched after clips from the broadcast circulated widely on social media and triggered backlash.<\/p>\n

The journalist had previously defended his comments, saying he had not intended to insult conservatives or nationalists and noting that they make up a significant portion of Turkish society.<\/p>\n

An indictment\u00a0drafted<\/a>\u00a0last month sought a prison sentence of up to three years for the journalist, accusing him of \u201cpublicly inciting hatred and enmity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aysever\u2019s prosecution has attracted attention to ongoing concerns about freedom of expression in Turkey, where journalists, commentators and social media personalities frequently face criminal investigations over their statements.<\/p>\n

Since 2002 Turkey has been ruled by President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan\u2019s Justice and Development Party (AKP), which describes itself as conservative-democratic but is accused by its critics of being nationalist, conservative and right-wing populist.<\/p>\n

Aysever\u2019s prosecution comes amid longstanding concerns over press freedom in Turkey, where journalists, commentators and social media personalities frequently face criminal charges over their statements.<\/p>\n
