\u200bA loud \u2060blast was heard near the U.S. embassy in \u200cwestern Oslo early on Sunday (March 8, 2026), triggering \u200ca large police \u200cresponse, \u2060investigators said.<\/p>\n

It was \u2060not immediately clear what caused the blast, which happened \u200bat around \u200c1 a.m. local time, or who was involved, the Oslo police \u200cdepartment said in \u200ba statement.<\/p>\n

“The police are in \u2060a dialogue with the embassy and there \u200care no reports of any injured persons,” the statement said.<\/p>\n

Smoke was seen rising from the area \u200caround the embassy compound, eyewitnesses \u200btold Norwegian daily Verdens Gang.<\/p>\n

The embassy \u2060did not immediately respond \u2060to a request for comment outside \u200cof regular business hours.<\/p>\n

Public broadcaster NRK quoted police incident commander Michael Dellemyr saying the blast hit the entrance of the embassy\u2019s consular section.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not going to comment on anything related to the type of damage, what it is that has exploded and similar details, beyond the fact that there has been an explosion\u201d because \u201cit is very early in the investigation\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

He later told TV2 that police \u201chave an idea of the cause\u201d, adding: \u201cIt appears to us that this is an act carried out by someone.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said investigators were talking to witnesses, and TV2 reported that a bomb squad was at the scene.<\/p>\n

A 16-year-old identified only as Edvard told TV2 that he was watching television when he heard the blast.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother and I first thought it came from our house so we looked around a little, but then we saw the flashing lights outside the window and a ton of police,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were police dogs and drones and police with automatic weapons and helicopters in the air,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A large area around the embassy was blocked off and police were stopping cars driving near the area, media outlets reported.<\/p>\n

U.S. embassies have been placed on high alert in West Asia over American military operations in Iran<\/a> and several have faced attacks as Tehran hits back at industrial and diplomatic targets.<\/p>\n

But Mr. Dellemyr said there was no indication as yet that the incident at the embassy in Oslo was connected to the conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not connecting it to the conflict. It\u2019s far too early for that,\u201d he told TV2.<\/p>\n
