{"id":39725,"date":"2026-03-13T23:34:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T23:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/39725\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T23:34:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T23:34:12","slug":"chp-youth-wing-official-receives-suspended-fine-over-alleged-insult-during-imamoglu-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/39725\/","title":{"rendered":"CHP youth wing official receives suspended fine over alleged insult during \u0130mamo\u011flu protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Ozlem-Unal.jpg\" data-caption=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- alt=\"\" title=\"O\u0308zlem U\u0308nal\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Ozlem-Unal-696x392.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Ozlem-Unal-696x392.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"O\u0308zlem U\u0308nal\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Turkish court on Tuesday handed down a suspended fine to \u00d6zlem \u00dcnal, a senior official in the youth wing of the main opposition Republican People\u2019s Party\u2019s (CHP), for allegedly insulting a police officer in Kocaeli province during protests triggered by the detention of \u0130stanbul Mayor Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu.<\/p>\n<p>According to the S\u00f6zc\u00fc daily, the Kocaeli 14th Court of First Instance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sozcu.com.tr\/amp\/imamoglu-protestosuna-para-cezasi-p300816\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">imposed<\/a> a fine of 35,400 lira (around $800) on \u00dcnal for \u201cinsulting a public official\u201d but suspended the sentence for five years, meaning she will not pay the fine unless she commits a similar offense within that time period.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing \u00dcnal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seskocaeli.com\/haber\/27613295\/chpli-ozlem-unal-davasinda-karar-cikti\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> the words cited in the indictment were directed at people jostling her. She added that there no officials in uniform were present at the location, making it impossible to distinguish police from civilians and journalists.<\/p>\n<p>The protests were part of a nationwide wave of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/protesters-fill-streets-in-turkey-defying-crackdown\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">demonstrations<\/a>\u00a0triggered by the March 19, 2025, detention of \u0130stanbul Mayor Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu, widely seen as President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan\u2019s strongest political rival. He was\u00a0later <a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/turkish-court-arrests-istanbul-mayor-in-graft-probe-amid-protests\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrested<\/a>\u00a0 on corruption charges that critics say are politically motivated and aimed at sidelining him ahead of the 2028 general election.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 2,000 people, including teenagers, students, lawyers, journalists, union leaders and human rights defenders, were detained nationwide during the protests that erupted after \u0130mamo\u011flu\u2019s detention. Some 300 of them were arrested.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure on the CHP and its municipalities has intensified since then. The party and its supporters say the operations targeting the CHP are designed to neutralize elected officials and sideline opposition leaders after the party\u2019s gains in the March 2024 local elections.<\/p>\n<p>As the crackdown on the CHP intensifies, youth leaders of the party have increasingly become targets of prosecution. Cem Ayd\u0131n, head of the party\u2019s youth wing,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/chp-youth-leader-gets-suspended-sentence-over-post-criticizing-prosecutor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">received<\/a> in February\u00a0a suspended sentence of more than one year for insulting Ak\u0131n G\u00fcrlek during his tenure as \u0130stanbul chief public prosecutor.
