S\u00f8reide, the leader of Norway&#8217;s Conservative party, said calls to stop Arctic development clash with Europe\u2019s current energy security priorities. \u201cIt sends a very bad signal when the Commission says we need to stop oil and gas development in the Arctic, because that&#8217;s development the EU relies on,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say the broader Arctic energy picture is dominated by Russia, which has major plans to expand liquefied natural gas production through projects such as Yamal LNG and Arctic LNG 2.<\/p>\n<p>Malte Humpert, founder\u00a0and senior fellow at the Arctic Institute, said climate change is rapidly transforming the once-inaccessible region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we didn&#8217;t have climate change, we wouldn&#8217;t be talking about Arctic geopolitics,\u201d he told POLITICO. \u201cClimate change is actively reshaping the map, where suddenly there&#8217;s new trade routes available that didn&#8217;t exist even 10, 15 years
