Kasper Schmeichel has withdrawn from Denmark\u2019s squad for the upcoming international break.<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old is yet to return to a matchday squad after being taken out for Celtic\u2019s 2-2 draw at Ibrox<\/a> on the first of this month.<\/p>\n

Celtic<\/a> boss Martin O\u2019Neill<\/a> has remained positive on Schmeichel,<\/a> insisting that they had been expecting Schmeichel to return to availability imminently.<\/p>\n

But after the news that he is taking a 4-6 week break, Denmark boss Brian Riemer has claimed that the news wasn\u2019t a surprise.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Bold via the Daily Record,<\/a> Riemer said: \u201cWe are aware that Kasper has informed me today that he is not available for the upcoming international matches due to an injury. <\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, it\u2019s always a shame when players get injured. There\u2019s been a while where he hasn\u2019t played, so it is no surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am pleased that we are well equipped in the goalkeeper position with two goalkeepers who perform at a high level in the Premier League. I am very comfortable with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is a major difference in tone from O\u2019Neill, who had been much more optimistic on Schmeichel\u2019s present situation.<\/p>\n

The Hoops boss had said: \u201cHe\u2019s much, much better now.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe trained today, and he didn\u2019t feel his shoulder; it\u2019s feeling much better after the injection. I\u2019ll have a look at that and see.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schmeichel doesn\u2019t seem to be feeling much better, admitting to being in extreme pain in Celtic\u2019s 4-1 defeat to Stuttgart.<\/a><\/p>\n

This all started in Denmark\u2019s Nations League tie against Portugal last March, which saw Schmeichel remain on the pitch despite breaking his shoulder.<\/p>\n

He did not undergo surgery and returned to Celtic training early. He made the starting XI for the Scottish Cup Final,<\/a> making a fatal error which allowed Aberdeen to win the trophy on penalties.<\/p>\n

This became a theme. Schmeichel\u2019s form has taken a sharp downturn this season, with the Dane clearly not operating anywhere near the levels he was in his stellar first nine months in Glasgow.<\/p>\n

There are now serious questions over whether he will ever play again, for club or country.<\/p>\n
