CT AG again seeks to get wind farm back on track after Trump order<\/a><\/p>\n The Biden administration sought to ramp up offshore wind<\/a> as a climate change solution.<\/p>\n But President Donald Trump, who often talks about his hatred of wind power<\/a>, has said his goal is to not let any \u201cwindmills\u201d be built. He has signed a spate of executive orders<\/a> aimed at boosting oil, gas and coal<\/a>.<\/p>\n White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said Friday night that Trump \u201creversed course on Joe Biden\u2019s costly green energy agenda that gave preferential treatment to intermittent, unreliable energy sources and instead is aggressively unleashing reliable and affordable energy sources to lower energy bills, improve our grid stability and protect our national security.\u201d Rogers added in a statement to AP that the administration \u201clooks forward to ultimate victory on this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n Orsted said that at a time of growing energy demand, Revolution Wind will provide price certainty and stability, citing a preliminary analysis by the state of Connecticut<\/a> that estimates it will lower wholesale energy costs by about $500 million per year by 2028.<\/p>\n \u201cRevolution Wind is adding affordable, reliable American-made energy to New England\u2019s grid, helping to meet growing energy demand and lower consumer costs,\u201d Amanda Dasch, chief development officer at Orsted, said in a statement.<\/p>\n U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. Saturday said, \u201cRevolution Wind\u2019s historic start marks a new era in Connecticut energy. I am thrilled that it has begun delivering power to our state and others, despite despicable Trump Administration attempts to stop it.<\/p>\n \u201cAs we confront a growing energy crisis that reveals how vulnerable we are to relying on fossil fuels, this stable source of reliable and renewable energy will power the region for decades to come. I\u2019ll continue to champion renewable energy efforts like Revolution Wind\u2014 lowering electricity costs, growing jobs and our economy, and protecting our environment,\u201d Blumenthal said, in a statement.<\/p>\n Chris Kearns, acting commissioner of the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources, called the first power milestone a \u201csignificant moment for the state\u2019s clean energy landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n Orsted began construction in 2024 about 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of the Rhode Island coast. The wind farm has 65 of the 11-megawatt Siemens Gamesa turbines, and more than 1,000 people have been working on it.<\/p>\n Connecticut Rep. Joe Courtney, a Democrat, said that because this wind energy is directly transmitted off the New England coast, \u201cits price will not be at the mercy of uncertain global energy markets.\u201d The Iran war is disrupting world energy supplies<\/a>, the global economy and international travel.<\/p>\n Courtney also said the milestone \u201cnever would have happened without talented Connecticut building trades workers, who persevered through the Trump administration\u2019s illegal halt work orders.\u201d<\/p>\n The order in December was the second time the administration halted construction on Revolution Wind. Work was previously paused Aug. 22<\/a> over national security concerns. A month later a federal judge ruled the project could resume.<\/p>\n Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Katie Dykes said Saturday, \u201cToday is good news for Connecticut and the region\u2019s ratepayers, who will save hundreds of millions of dollars a year on their electricity bills thanks to Connecticut and Rhode Island\u2019s efforts to bring Revolution Wind online.<\/p>\n \u201cAs we\u2019ve seen from the harsh winter we\u2019ve had, and the impacts to fossil fuel prices as a result of the Iran war, having diverse sources of stable, reliable power that both perform strongly in the winter and are insulated from geopolitical events is beneficial to Connecticut ratepayers,\u201d Dykes said, in the statement. \u201cThese first power deliveries are an important milestone, with greater benefits yet to come as the project heads to completion and full operation later this year.\u201d<\/p>\n The Hartford Courant added material to this story.
