AMSTERDAM, March 14 (Reuters) – An explosion caused minor damage to a Jewish school in Amsterdam early on Saturday, \u200cin what the city’s mayor described as “a deliberate \u200cattack against the Jewish community”.<\/p>\n
The explosion at the school in an upscale residential \u200bneighbourhood on the south side of Amsterdam damaged a rainpipe and charred an outer wall. It caused no injuries.<\/p>\n
Mayor Femke Halsema said the incident was being taken very seriously and would \u200clead to increased \u2060security at Jewish institutions.<\/p>\n
“This is a cowardly act of aggression against the Jewish community,” Halsema said.<\/p>\n
“Jewish \u2060people in Amsterdam are increasingly confronted with antisemitism. This is unacceptable.”<\/p>\n
The school is the only one specifically for orthodox Jews in \u200bthe Netherlands, \u200band is largely fenced off \u200bby a pointed, metal \u200couter wall due to earlier threats.<\/p>\n
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten called Saturday’s attack “horrible” and said it understandably caused fear and anger in the Jewish community.<\/p>\n
“The safety of Jewish institutions has our full attention,” he said in a post on X.<\/p>\n
Security \u200cat synagogues and Jewish institutions in \u200bthe Dutch capital had already been \u200bheightened after an overnight \u200barson attack at a synagogue in the centre \u200cof Rotterdam on Friday.<\/p>\n
In neighbouring \u200bBelgium, an explosion \u200bcaused a fire at a synagogue in Liege on Monday.<\/p>\n
Concerns about possible attacks against Jewish communities around the \u200bworld have risen \u200cfollowing U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran and a \u200bsubsequent response from Tehran.<\/p>\n
