\u201cWe are going to do something on Greenland<\/a>, whether they like it or not, because if we don\u2019t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we\u2019re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor,\u201d Trump told reporters<\/a> during an event at the White House on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to make a deal the easy way, but if we don\u2019t do it the easy way, we will do it the hard way<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But the Greenlandic leaders pushed back, repeating their request to be left alone to manage their own affairs. \u201cWe would like to emphasize once again our desire for the U.S.\u2019s disdain for our country to end<\/a>,\u201d they said. \u201cThe future of Greenland must be decided by the Greenlandic people.\u201d<\/p>\n

They added that they have increased their \u201cinternational participation\u201d<\/a> in recent years. \u201cWe must again call for that dialogue to continue to be based on diplomacy and international principles<\/a>,\u201d they said in the statement.<\/p>\n

The party leaders also said that a meeting of the parliament, the Inatsisartut, will be brought forward<\/a> to ensure that a fair and comprehensive political debate takes place and that the people\u2019s rights are secured.<\/p>\n

Taking over Greenland would be relatively simple, according to officials and experts<\/a>, though Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned<\/a> that doing so would spell the end of NATO.<\/p>\n
