{"id":42372,"date":"2026-03-18T02:25:45","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T02:25:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/42372\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T02:25:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T02:25:45","slug":"san-francisco-moves-closer-to-permitting-amsterdam-style-cannabis-cafes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/42372\/","title":{"rendered":"San Francisco moves closer to permitting Amsterdam-style cannabis cafes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">SAN FRANCISCO COULD JOIN the growing number of California cities that allow food and drinks to be consumed at licensed cannabis cafes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>County Board of Supervisors President and District 8 representative Rafael Mandelman said Monday that he will introduce an ordinance during the Board of Supervisors\u2019 regular meeting Tuesday to amend several city codes to allow such businesses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to support our legal cannabis industry,\u201d said Mandelman at a press conference on the steps of San Francisco City Hall on Monday morning. \u201cToo often and in too many ways in San Francisco and in California, we do the opposite.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A state law in 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2024\/01\/08\/haney-reintroduces-bill-that-would-legalize-amsterdam-style-cannabis-cafes-in-california\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2024\/01\/08\/haney-reintroduces-bill-that-would-legalize-amsterdam-style-cannabis-cafes-in-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">authored by Assemblymember Matt Haney<\/a>, D-San Francisco, paved the way for local jurisdictions to sell goods at dispensaries that aren\u2019t necessarily infused with cannabis, including regular pastries, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mandelman\u2019s proposed ordinance would amend city codes related to health, police, planning and taxes to pave the way for permitting the cafes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Such sales had previously been banned under state law, even after on-site cannabis consumption was legalized.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made no sense,\u201d Haney said at the press conference. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t sell a croissant, a bagel, a coffee, let alone create the kind of diversity in offering that would <a href=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2023\/09\/14\/struggling-pot-shops-may-benefit-if-newsom-approves-amsterdam-style-cannabis-cafes\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2023\/09\/14\/struggling-pot-shops-may-benefit-if-newsom-approves-amsterdam-style-cannabis-cafes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">allow a business to actually survive<\/a> and thrive.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two lawmakers appeared along with local cannabis business owners and advocates who have been pushing for more normalization and incorporation of cannabis into the hospitality sector.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Haney has referred to the cafes as <a href=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2025\/01\/03\/california-to-launch-amsterdam-style-cannabis-cafes-blending-weed-and-coffee-culture\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/localnewsmatters.org\/2025\/01\/03\/california-to-launch-amsterdam-style-cannabis-cafes-blending-weed-and-coffee-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cAmsterdam-style\u201d cafes<\/a>, referencing the famed Dutch coffee shops there known for being frequented by tourists and helping define the legal cannabis experience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said Monday that San Francisco had a chance to create a reputation as a leader in the global cannabis industry.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is also about the culture and the community and what it means for us to be a place that shapes what cannabis culture looks like for the entire world,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cities of San Diego, West Hollywood and Sacramento have already opened cafes following the passage of Haney\u2019s Assembly Bill 1775.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sales of legal cannabis in the state have sagged by 20% since 2021, according to Haney.
