{"id":42746,"date":"2026-03-18T12:51:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T12:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/42746\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T12:51:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T12:51:10","slug":"death-by-algorithm-ai-big-tech-in-cphdox-copenhagen-spotlight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/42746\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Death-by-Algorithm,&#8221; AI, Big Tech in CPH:DOX Copenhagen Spotlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cRekindling the Machine: Documentary in the Age of AI\u201d was the topic for a panel at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/poh-si-teng-american-doctor-documentary-cph-dox-film-gaza-1236535977\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CPH:Conference industry event<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/copenhagen-cphdox-2026-competition-lineup-1236503370\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">23rd edition<\/a>\u00a0of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/cphdox\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CPH:DOX<\/a>, the\u00a0Copenhagen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/international\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international_1\" data-tag=\"international\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International<\/a>\u00a0Documentary Film Festival, on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tModerated by artist and cultural strategist Kamal Sinclair, the panel brought together experts who focus on the dark sides of technology. The speakers included Marc Silver, director of the documentary Molly vs the Machines, which tells the story of a heartbroken father\u2019s quest to uncover the truth behind his daughter\u2019s \u201cdeath-by-algorithm\u201d and his battle against how some of the most powerful corporations of our age operate, and Anne Marie Engtoft Meldgaard, Denmark\u2019s tech ambassador, who spearheads Techplomacy, an initiative \u201celevating technology and digitalization to a cross-cutting foreign and security policy priority of the Danish government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSilver discussed Molly, a synopsis for which reads: \u201cMolly was a perfectly ordinary 14-year-old English girl. One day, like any other, she came home from school, did her homework, said goodnight to her parents, and went to her room. A few hours later, she had taken her own life. No one saw it coming \u2013 except the algorithms in her phone.\u201d Highlights the CPH:DOX website: \u201cThe emotional core of the film is Molly\u2019s story, but with its broad intellectual and legal scope, the film also hits like a digital landmine at a time when the battle against Big Tech has never been more heated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSilver said about AI during Wednesday\u2019s panel: \u201cIt has this god-like omniscience, while we know nothing about it.\u201d He also highlighted modern technology\u2019s \u201cefficiency,\u201d which meant that it \u201cgave Molly what she wanted and pushed her towards her death.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Meldgaard highlighted this as one of the various possible \u201cunintended consequences\u201d of AI, as well as other technologies. \u201cWe need to calibrate an understanding and have a risk discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_5926.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tAnne Marie Engtoft Meldgaard in \u2018Techplomacy\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe also highlighted how the development of AI relates to power imbalances in the world. \u201cUltimately, this is about military might,\u201d she argued, pointing to \u201cthe geopolitical race\u201d between the U.S. and China. And she warned: \u201cWe\u2019re living in an age of predators.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMeldgaard\u2019s suggestion for an age of social media, podcasts and other digital offerings available all day and all night: \u201cWe got to find meaningful analogue alternatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMeldgaard is featured in director Susanne Kovacs\u2019 documentary Techplomacy, which was produced by Good Company Pictures and world premiered at CPH:DOX. \u201cFrom freedom of speech to fake news and AI. In a largely unregulated digital world, a 33-year-old Danish woman is appointed tech ambassador with a global mandate,\u201d the film\u2019s synopsis reads. \u201cMeldgaard is taking on the world\u2019s most powerful tech companies \u2013 from Silicon Valley to the UN \u2013 and pushing for regulation, accountability, and digital rights.
