\n\tOscar Isaac<\/a> and his wife, director Elvira Lind<\/a> (Bobbie Jene), made a splash in Copenhagen on Wednesday evening with the international<\/a> premiere of King Hamlet<\/a> at the 23rd edition<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Copenhagen\u00a0International\u00a0Documentary Film Festival<\/a>, or \u00a0CPH:DOX<\/a>, followed by a warm Q&A with the hometown crowd.<\/p>\n

\n\tLind\u2019s film, which she shot a decade ago, is a deeply personal portrait of her actor husband as he tackles what the documentary describes as \u201cthe most difficult role of his life\u201d \u2014 playing Hamlet at New York\u2019s Public Theater. The film captures Isaac navigating the demands of the role while also expecting his first child with Lind and grieving the recent loss of his mother.<\/p>\n

\n\tKing Hamlet comes from producers Sara Stockmann and Sofia Sondervan, alongside Lind and Isaac\u2019s Mad Gene Media, Sonntag Pictures and Dutch Tilt Film.<\/p>\n

\n\tCPH:DOX in a preview of Wednesday\u2019s premiere of the film quoted Lind as saying: \u201cWhen I started filming this project, it wasn\u2019t so much Shakespeare\u2019s text about grief and revenge that interested me, but how Oscar would crawl under Hamlet\u2019s skin and live there for a period of time, losing himself in it. Oscar likes to delve deeply into his work and allow himself to disappear completely into the process, and that was exactly what I wanted to document \u2014 it was the dance I dreamed of.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter a warm reception from the Copenhagen audience \u2014 many of them friends and family \u2014 Lind was visibly moved. \u201cIt\u2019s so amazing to take this film to Denmark and share with everyone here where the film was made, and I was made, too,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe project began modestly. Lind recalled thinking she would simply film her then-boyfriend\u2019s theater workshop, with no grand plan for a documentary. They were also filming at home, she added \u2014 at which point Isaac turned to the audience with a quip: \u201cNot those kinds of films.\u201d The joke took a beat to land, then drew laughter from the crowd.<\/p>\n

\n\tIsaac said the understanding at the time was that the footage \u201cmight never see the light of day.\u201d He also credited his wife\u2019s unobtrusive camera work for much of what the film captures. \u201cShe\u2019s kind of a ninja,\u201d he said. \u201cShe can be quite invisible. She\u2019s like a nature photographer \u2014 she doesn\u2019t spook the elk while filming, or the cheetahs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAccess wasn\u2019t always easy. The rehearsal space had restrictions, and Lind tackled the project with a newborn. \u201cMe with a baby just maybe didn\u2019t feel like what they needed,\u201d she told the audience. At home, meanwhile, Isaac wasn\u2019t always ready for the camera either. \u201cOh no, not now,\u201d he recalled telling her when she greeted him with it after a long day\u2019s work. \u201cBut,\u201d he added, \u201cthat\u2019s part of the tension of the film.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIsaac compared King Hamlet to a film about a band making an album. \u201cYou really see this group come together,\u201d he said. The couple\u2019s son Eugene \u2014 shown in the documentary both in the womb and as a baby \u2014 was in the audience for Wednesday\u2019s premiere.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor Isaac, the film also captures something irretrievable. \u201cIt does feel like you get to see how unglamorous it can be, and what a weird thing it is, particularly theater,\u201d he said. He called the film \u201ca miracle\u201d for the way it preserves \u201cthe fluidity of the moment. You just see it disappear. There are people in this film, in my family, who are no longer with us as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWatching himself on screen ten years later, Isaac was struck by how much has changed. The film shows him saying that after his mother\u2019s death, the only thing that pulls him out of his grief is thinking about the play. \u201cNow I would say to that person: \u2018Don\u2019t get out of your sorrow. You don\u2019t have to escape it. And there is no escaping it.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFor Lind, making the film was its own revelation. \u201cI had no idea what it took,\u201d she said of her husband\u2019s process. \u201cSeeing him go through it was really intense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tActing, Isaac reflected, is \u201ca condensing of myself\u201d rather than the playing of other people \u2014 and the film is ultimately about that particular challenge. \u201cWe are watching someone on a tightrope with their own ego and their own feelings of humiliation, and do they overcome it or not and how?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for what comes next: Lind is developing a fiction project, though documentaries, she says, \u201cremain my first love.\u201d Isaac, for his part, is in no rush to return to the stage.
