Denmark reportedly flew blood bags and explosives into Greenland as it prepared for a full-scale war against the US after Donald Trump<\/a> threatened to invade the island.<\/p>\n

Danish troops\u00a0carried live ammunition and bombs to destroy runways in the capital Nuuk and in Kangerlussuaq, a small town north of the capital,\u00a0to prevent US aircraft from landing there if war broke out.<\/p>\n

Officials feared the US would attack at any moment after Trump threatened to take over the territory ‘the hard way’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Denmark reportedly sought political support from\u00a0France<\/a>, Germany<\/a>\u00a0and its Nordic neighbours to form a European alliance defending Greenland against a US takeover shortly after Trump won the 2024 election.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The US attack on Venezuela, which saw troops capture its president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and bring him to New York, was a turning point.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘When Trump keeps saying he wants to take over Greenland, and then what happened in Venezuela happened, we had to take all scenarios seriously,’ a source told Danish public broadcaster\u00a0DR<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A day later Trump said the US needed Greenland ‘very badly’ to prevent China or Russia from taking over, triggering a diplomatic crisis.<\/p>\n

He claimed he would ‘worry about Greenland in about two months’, stating ‘we need Greenland from a national security situation. It’s so strategic’, adding ‘right now Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also threatened European allies with additional trade tariffs after they opposed his plans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There was already reportedly plans for Danish and European forces to send soldiers to Greenland later in the year, but it was quickly brought forward.<\/p>\n

Soldiers from Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden and France arrived in\u00a0Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir Starmer sent a single military officer to Greenland to join a reconnaissance mission.<\/p>\n

French President Emmanuel Macron said the initial group would be reinforced with ‘land, air, and sea assets’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The deployment, known as\u00a0Operation Arctic Endurance,\u00a0was presented as a joint military exercise but was in reality to guard against a US invasion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump accused his European allies of ‘playing a dangerous game’ by travelling to Greenland ‘for purposes unknown’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘The political leadership, the Defence and the security apparatus in Denmark decided to “play the game”,’ a French official said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Danish soldiers carried ammunition and would engage in combat in the event of an invasion, while heavily armed F-35 fighter jets were moved north.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘We have not been in such a situation since April 1940,’ a Danish defence source told DR.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump eventually abandoned threats to use force to take over Greenland but said he is hoping for ‘immediate negotiations’ to find a compromise.<\/p>\n
