{"id":44265,"date":"2026-03-20T06:51:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T06:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/44265\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T06:51:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T06:51:10","slug":"british-antarctic-survey-scientists-head-to-greenland-to-understand-climate-impact-of-melting-glaciers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/44265\/","title":{"rendered":"British Antarctic Survey scientists head to Greenland to understand climate impact of melting glaciers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An international team of scientists is heading to Greenland for two months this summer to learn how quickly the ice sheet\u2019s rapidly melting glaciers are pushing the Atlantic Ocean towards a critical climate tipping point.<\/p>\n<p>The fieldwork is part of a five-year project, known as GIANT (Greenland Ice sheet to AtlaNtic Tipping points) &#8211; a collaboration of 17 partners led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgeindependent.co.uk\/news\/accidental-discovery-by-british-antarctic-survey-reveals-thr-9455580\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">British Antarctic Survey<\/a> (BAS) and funded by the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 6000 4000\" alt=\"North East Greenland. Picture: Dave Roberts, BAS<\/p>\n<p>Researchers hope to understand how much meltwater is released from Greenland\u2019s fjord glaciers, how it enters the North Atlantic Ocean and how this influences ocean circulation and the global climate system.<\/p>\n<p>Sophisticated technologies, including airborne drones, autonomous marine robots, satellites and instruments embedded directly into glacier ice, will be used to understand how these glaciers interact with the ocean. To date, the 200 or so narrow fjords have been impossible to capture in global computer models.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Kelly Hogan, co-creator on GIANT and a climate scientist at BAS, said: \u201cThis is a massively ambitious project and is urgent. We know Greenland is losing ice at an unprecedented rate and this will impact the surrounding ocean \u2013 from the coastal fjords so important to Greenland\u2019s communities to the large currents that bring heat to Western Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to ensure we can provide meaningful information to policymakers, so they are informed to make decisions that support the security of society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The co-ordinated observing system will enable researchers to study glacier behaviour from individual cracks in the ice up to the flow of meltwater and icebergs into the North Atlantic. The data will feed into multiple computer models boosted by both machine learning and AI.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists will then incorporate Greenland\u2019s fjords into the UK\u2019s main climate model and develop a prototype Early Warning System that could provide advance notice of rapid glacier change.<\/p>\n<p>Current models struggle to predict exactly when a climate tipping point will be crossed and the consequences of doing so.<\/p>\n<p>These are critical thresholds in Earth\u2019s systems \u2013 such as ice sheets, rainforests or ocean currents \u2013 beyond which change can become rapid, self-perpetuating and potentially irreversible.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 5472 3648\" alt=\"Researchers will head to Greenland this summer.
