{"id":4575,"date":"2026-02-08T08:05:22","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T08:05:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/4575\/"},"modified":"2026-02-08T08:05:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T08:05:22","slug":"jkmm-architects-to-design-museum-of-architecture-and-design-helsinki","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/4575\/","title":{"rendered":"JKMM Architects to design Museum of Architecture and Design Helsinki"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A design by Finnish studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/jkmm-architects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JKMM Architects<\/a> with sloped facades made from recycled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bricks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brick<\/a> has been announced as the winner of a contest for a design museum in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/helsinki\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Helsinki<\/a>, which is set to be built on the site of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/guggenheim-helsinki\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city&#8217;s ill-fated Guggenheim museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Set to be built on a vacant plot on Helsinki&#8217;s South Harbour, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/museums\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">museum<\/a> will\u00a0host exhibitions on the architecture and design of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/finland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Finland<\/a>, showcasing over 900,000 objects that explore the works of architects Aino and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/alvar-aalto\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alvar Aalto<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/eero-aarnio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eero Aarnio<\/a>, Eliel and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/eero-saarinen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eero Saarinen<\/a>, and design brands such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/marimekko\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marimekko<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/nokia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nokia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of five finalists selected from 624 proposals, <a href=\"https:\/\/jkmm.fi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JKMM Architects<\/a>&#8216; design will be built on a plot previously earmarked for the Guggenheim Helsinki, which was <a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2016\/12\/01\/finnish-government-scraps-guggenheim-helsinki-museum-moreau-kusunoki-architectes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2016\/12\/01\/finnish-government-scraps-guggenheim-helsinki-museum-moreau-kusunoki-architectes\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">scrapped by the Finnish government in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2246980 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/museum-of-architecture-and-design-helsinki-jkmm-architects-finland_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x646.jpg\" alt=\"Museum of Architecture and Design Helsinki by JKMM Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1792\"  \/>JKMM Architects has revealed the winning design for the Museum of Architecture and Design Helsinki<\/p>\n<p>JKMM Architects&#8217; design aims to be a flexible and inclusive cultural landmark that is welcoming to visitors, designed to stand out in its surroundings while complementing the scale of the neighbouring buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Renders show a geometric building arranged around a triangular central <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/atriums\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">atrium<\/a>, with triangle-shaped windows puncturing sloped facades that will be made from recycled brick.<\/p>\n<p>As well as exhibition space, the Museum of Architecture and Design Helsinki will contain a design library and an outdoor terrace wrapping the upper level.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2246989 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/museum-of-architecture-and-design-helsinki-jkmm-architects-finland_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x1075.jpg\" alt=\"Render of Museum of Architecture and Design Helsinki by JKMM Architects\" width=\"1874\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Facades will be made from recycled brick<\/p>\n<p>Construction on the geometric building is expected to commence in 2027, with plans to open the museum to the public in 2030.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hope that the planning and realisation of the new Museum of Architecture and Design can show the way for how new things can be built responsibly and with skill,&#8221; design for the waterfront museum was recently selected as the winning design in an international competition, in which it was known as Kumma.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kumma blends into the cityscape, protecting valuable views of the historic waterfront, while at the same time standing out as a recognisable landmark,&#8221;
