{"id":46594,"date":"2026-03-23T18:07:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T18:07:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/46594\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T18:07:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T18:07:13","slug":"jailed-opposition-mayor-faces-up-to-35-years-in-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/46594\/","title":{"rendered":"Jailed opposition mayor faces up to 35 years in prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Inan-Guney.jpg\" data-caption=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- alt=\"\" title=\"I\u0307nan Gu\u0308ney\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Inan-Guney-696x392.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Inan-Guney-696x392.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"I\u0307nan Gu\u0308ney\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors in \u0130stanbul have drafted an indictment seeking up to 35 years in prison for jailed Beyo\u011flu Mayor \u0130nan G\u00fcney, a member of Turkey\u2019s main opposition Republican People\u2019s Party (CHP), <a href=\"https:\/\/turkishminute.com\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/turkishminute.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Turkish Minute<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution has also asked that his case be merged with a sprawling \u0130stanbul Metropolitan Municipality trial centered on jailed \u0130stanbul Mayor Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment was sent to the \u0130stanbul 40th High Criminal Court, which is already hearing the municipality case.<\/p>\n<p>Also named as defendants in the indictment are G\u00fcney\u2019s chief of staff Seyhan \u00d6zcan, his sister Sabriye Akkaya, his brother-in-law \u0130smail Akkaya, his driver Deniz G\u00f6leli and his bodyguard Veysel Eren G\u00fcven. Prosecutors are seeking sentences ranging from more than 12 years to 35 years on charges including aiding a criminal organization without being a member of it and defrauding public institutions and organizations, according to Turkish media reports.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors tied G\u00fcney\u2019s file to the larger case against \u0130mamo\u011flu and other municipal officials by repeating claims that a profit-driven criminal structure operated through opposition-run municipalities and public tenders. The indictment describes \u0130mamo\u011flu as the alleged leader of the structure and Murat Ongun, a close aide to him, as one of its key figures.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00fcney has been in pretrial detention for about seven months. He was detained in August 2025 along with dozens of others in a corruption investigation targeting the \u0130stanbul Metropolitan Municipality. At the time, 44 people were detained and 17, including G\u00fcney, were later jailed pending trial.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes as the broader case against \u0130mamo\u011flu, President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan\u2019s main political rival, is already under way, with the trial involving more than 400 defendants linked to the municipality. Opposition figures, rights groups and various foreign officials have described the proceedings as political.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00fcney\u2019s indictment also drew attention to what critics described as weak evidentiary language in parts of the file, with many witnesses basing their testimony on hearsay.
