Mohamed Elyounoussi has been caught in an unlikely relegation battle with Copenhagen.<\/p>\n

The ex-Celtic<\/a> forward, who established himself as a well-liked figure over two years in Glasgow, was linked with a return before moving to the Danish capital in 2023.<\/p>\n

Having competed in the knockout stages of the Champions League<\/a> with Copenhagen,<\/a> he is now part of a team which has taken just one point from their last eight league matches.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a remarkable situation, with Elyounoussi<\/a> facing the daunting prospect of being part of the first ever FCK side to be relegated from the Danish Superliga.<\/p>\n

Remarkably, the club\u2019s last league win came in the local derby against Brondby in November.<\/p>\n

They have won two Champions League matches in that time \u2013 against Villarreal and our mates Kairat Almaty \u2013 failing to reach the knockout phase of the tournament regardless.<\/p>\n

Their appalling league form leaves them just six points clear of Silkeborg in the relegation zone, with eight games of the season remaining.<\/p>\n

Denmark operate with an end-of-season split, similar to that of Scotland. In FCK\u2019s two matches since said split, they have amassed zero points in the bottom half.<\/p>\n

Among Elyounoussi\u2019s teammates are son of the king Jordan Larsson<\/a> and ex-Celtic targets Birger Meling<\/a> and Aurelio Buta.<\/a><\/p>\n

How has this happened? Well, despite historically being dominated by Copenhagen, the Danish league is significantly more competitive than what we\u2019re used to in Scotland.<\/p>\n

It has been won by five different clubs since 2012, though under current boss Jacob Neestrup, FCK have won three of the last four.<\/p>\n

This season could see a new champion crowned, with Midtjylland<\/a> five points behind in a title race with league leaders AGF, who have never won the Danish Superliga in their history.<\/p>\n

Fellow surprise packages Sonderjyske are in third, with Brondby \u2013 managed by ex-Nottingham Forest<\/a> boss Steve Cooper \u2013 lagging behind in fifth.<\/p>\n

He was a surprise loan signing from Southampton<\/a> in 2019, and quickly established himself as a key figure in Neil Lennon\u2019s<\/a> attack.<\/p>\n

The Norwegian international became a title-winner after his first season was curtailed by Covid. He returned again for the 2020-21 campaign and excelled with his form, despite the season itself being disastrous. <\/p>\n

Elyounoussi amassed 17 goals in the behind-closed-doors campaign before heading back down south.<\/p>\n
