Fallon \/ AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Lego Group\u2019s new Smart Play bricks, tags and miniature figures \u2014 showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas \u2014 \u201crepresent one of the most significant evolutions\u201d of the Lego System-in-Play and will allegedly make entire Lego sets come to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this exciting innovation, builders can bring their LEGO creations to life in ways they\u2019ve never imagined!\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lego.com\/en-us\/aboutus\/news\/2026\/december\/lego-smart-play-announcement?CMP=AFC-AffiliateUS-TnL5HPStwNw-2116208-1606623-10&amp;locale=en-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">press release<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>Starting March 1, 2026, the new sets will be available for sale in select markets \u2014 starting with the Lego world of Star Wars.<\/p>\n<p>Lego\u2019s new Smart Play initiative was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas. David Becker\/Getty Images for The LEGO Group<\/p>\n<p>The first sets being released featuring Lego Smart Play include:<\/p>\n<p>Lego\u00a0\u201cStar Wars\u201c SMART Play: Darth Vader\u2019s TIE Fighter building set: $69.99; 473 pieces featuring a brick-built Rebel Outpost and an Imperial Fueling Station, as well as a Smart Minifigure featuring Darth Vader and a Rebel Fleet Trooper Minifigure<\/p>\n<p>Lego\u00a0\u201cStar Wars\u201c SMART Play: Luke\u2019s Red Five X-wing building set: $89.99; 584 pieces including two Smart Minifigures (Luke Skywalker, in his iconic pilot suit, and Princess Leia), as well as Luke\u2019s trusty companion, R2-D2, and Rebel Crew and Stormtrooper Minifigures, plus an Imperial turret, transporter and command center.<\/p>\n<p>Lego\u00a0\u201cStar Wars\u201c SMART Play: Throne Room Duel &amp; A-wing building set: $159.99; 962 pieces featuring three Smart Minifigures with the characters Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine and Luke Skywalker (Jedi), as well as a\u00a0brick-built A-Wing Fighter and Pilot Minifigure, two Royal Guard Minifigures, and a Smart Tag-enabled cannon turret to defend the Emperor\u2019s Throne Room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time in the history of Lego Star Wars, with Lego Smart Play sets, the battle comes to life, allowing fans to recreate iconic scenes and interactions, as well as create new ones,\u201d according to Lego.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike batter-powered Lego toys, these new products are wirelessly charged using a charging pad that can handle multiple bricks at one time and a battery that \u201cwill still perform after years of inactivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smart Bricks and Smart Play systems have light and sound, light sensors and inertial sensors that detect movement and gestures, allowing the new Lego tiles to connect with other Smart Bricks and NFC-equipped smart tags nearby. <\/p>\n<p>According to the company, the elements will be aware of the others\u2019 positions and orientations and can react in real time to provide an interactive experience to kids and families. Sound effects can also be added to creations as the Smart Bricks are being played with.<\/p>\n<p>Starting March 1, 2026 the new sets will be available for sale in select markets. Lego<\/p>\n<p>The bricks will also have a microphone that is used as a virtual button rather than a recording device, Lego Group spokesperson Jessica Benson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/854556\/lego-announces-smart-brick-the-most-significant-evolution-in-50-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">explained to The Verge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen it where you blow on it, if you put it on a birthday cake, for instance, it makes things happen,\u201d she shared. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very much used as another sensor point, it\u2019s not recording any details, it\u2019s just picking up those inputs that are to do with sound and reacting in real time to what the kids are doing with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benson also confirmed that the new initiative contains no artificial intelligence at all, as well as no camera. <\/p>\n<p>The bricks will also have a microphone that is used as a virtual button rather than a recording device. Lego<\/p>\n<p>Tom Donaldson, senior vice president and head of the Creative Play Lab at the Lego Group, noted that the launch of Smart Play allows for the combination of creativity, technology and storytelling \u2014 \u201call without a screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Lego SMART Play All-in-One sets from LEGO Star Wars will be available for pre-order starting January 9.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Even your Legos are going through a technological revolution.
