Dutch authorities have seized 261 suspected wild parrot eggs at Amsterdam\u2019s Schiphol airport \u200bafter finding them in the hand \u200cluggage of a couple flying from Central America to Asia, the Netherlands food and product safety watchdog \u200bsaid on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Customs officers found the eggs \u200bon March 24, packed individually in paper \u2060and grouped in bundles wrapped in T\u2011shirts. \u200bWhen they examined one of the bundles, they \u200bheard chirping and discovered a parrot chick hatching. The bird was too young to determine its species, the \u200bNetherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n
The Royal Military Police detained the two travellers, whose \u200cidentity \u2060and nationality were not made public.<\/p>\n
All parrot species are protected under the CITES convention, a global treaty that regulates trade in endangered plants \u200band animals, \u200bmeaning strict \u2060rules apply to the possession and trade of the birds and \u200btheir eggs. The travellers had no documents \u200bproving \u2060legal ownership, the NVWA said.<\/p>\n
The eggs and the newly hatched chick have been transferred to \u2060a \u200bspecialised care facility, where the \u200bremaining eggs will be incubated and the chicks cared for.<\/p>\n
