{"id":4997,"date":"2026-02-08T13:44:22","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T13:44:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/4997\/"},"modified":"2026-02-08T13:44:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T13:44:22","slug":"denmark-and-allies-boost-greenland-military-footprint-as-trump-ramps-up-pressure-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/4997\/","title":{"rendered":"Denmark and allies boost Greenland military footprint as Trump ramps up pressure \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So far, the deployment remains intergovernmental and has not been formally approved by NATO, according to two people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to show that Denmark and key allies can increase their presence in the Arctic region,\u201d said a third person briefed on the plans, demonstrating their &#8220;ability to operate under the unique Arctic conditions and thereby strengthen the alliance\u2019s footprint in the Arctic, benefiting both European and transatlantic security.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement landed the same day U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers in Washington, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/europe-greenland-donald-trump-deal-nato-friedrich-merz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">following days of rising transatlantic tensions<\/a> over President Donald Trump&#8217;s bid to take over the strategic island.<\/p>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115893255826342514\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">escalated the dispute<\/a> earlier Wednesday in a Truth Social post, declaring that \u201cthe United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security,\u201d calling it \u201cvital\u201d for his planned \u201cGolden Dome\u201d missile defense system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also insisted that seizing Greenland would not destroy NATO, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/nato-done-if-us-donald-trump-invades-greenland-denmark-pm-mette-frederiksen-warns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warnings<\/a> from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that such a move would end the Atlantic alliance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Militarily, without the vast power of the United States &#8230; NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent \u2014 Not even close!&#8221; Trump posted. &#8220;They know that, and so do I.
