{"id":51763,"date":"2026-03-30T15:50:55","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T15:50:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/51763\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T15:50:55","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T15:50:55","slug":"us-book-critics-honor-nobel-laureate-and-south-korean-novelist-han-kang-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/51763\/","title":{"rendered":"US book critics honor Nobel laureate and South Korean novelist Han Kang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By AUDREY McAVOY<\/p>\n<p>A novel by <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nobel-literature-prize-e52fdabe9379d351d744e121218bddc5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nobel laureate Han Kang<\/a>, Karen Hao\u2019s examination of artificial intelligence and OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) and a memoir by the author Arundhati Roy were among the winners Thursday of the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookcritics.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Book Critics Circle<\/a> awards.<\/p>\n<p>Han\u2019s \u201cWe Do Not Part,\u201d translated by e.yaewon and Paige Aniyah Morris, addresses a 1948-1949 uprising on Jeju, an island south of the Korean mainland, in which thousands of people were killed.<\/p>\n<p>Heather Scott Partington, who chaired the awards\u2019 fiction committee, described the novel as \u201ca work of blinding melancholy, bleak weather, and murmuring syntax\u201d and said it \u201clingers like an atmospheric and arresting dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lifetime achievement award went to author and journalist Frances FitzGerald, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vietnam-war-books-fiction-nonfiction-5934e3724c05c00891b5e0eba274770f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1972 \u201cFire in the Lake\u201d<\/a> was an early and prescient take on the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n<p>NPR and PBS were presented with the achievement award honoring institutions that have made significant contributions to book culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when some question the value of public, service-minded media, we salute PBS and NPR for all you have done for both book culture and American democracy,\u201d said Jacob M.
