New Delhi: Four years after resuming its operations, the Finnish embassy in Pakistan will be closing this summer over \u201coperational and strategic reasons\u201d.<\/p>\n
Though the move was announced in November 2024, Finnish embassy officials confirmed to Pakistani media about its eventual closure on Wednesday. Earlier, the embassy had closed in August 2012 due to budget cuts and reopened officially on 1 September 2022. Last year, Finland\u2019s Ministry for Foreign Affairs stated it will shut its embassies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Myanmar by 2026, citing changes in the host countries\u2019 political climate and their limited economic engagement with Finland.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe aim is to concentrate resources on countries that are strategically important to Finland. The long-term development of the network of missions abroad also means that some missions will be closed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Finnish embassy sources told Pakistani media outlet The News that the mission is being closed due to strategic and operational reasons. The embassy provides limited consular services, though visa and passport matters are often handled by other Finnish missions, such as the one in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n
The embassies in the other two countries were being closed due to the same reasons. This, according to the media reports, \u201cis part of a broader plan to reform Finland\u2019s global diplomatic presence.\u201d<\/p>\n
