It is still reasonably sized, measuring around 31 cm (12″) long, and has a white and blue colour scheme with scattered portions of light grey.

Although the modern downscaled version has lost some detail in the shaping, this model features some upgrades – most notably around the nose section, where subtle angles and cheese slopes are used to create a very gently angled, hexagonal shape that narrows to the grey tip. It’s a satisfying piece of engineering that isn’t overly complex, but still impressive nonetheless.

The back looks reasonable, but level of detail is definitely a little lower which is slightly disappointing, especially in a $70 set. The rear bodywork between the engine thrusters looks reasonable though, with a mech torso piece used sideways for extra texture.

Turning to the features, the gorgeous printed cockpit glass piece opens up with a slot for a pilot and printed console (although the pilot has to lean back a fair bit).

Behind that is the astromech port. It works smoothly and has enough friction, so is a reasonable solution at this scale.

That said, a closer look is a little bit more disappointing. This area lacks any detail, with just the bare Technic beams exposed. It’s also much lower than the rest of the bodywork, which makes the astromech look even more protruding and just looks a bit unfinished overall. Considering the price point of this set, it definitely feels like a few more pieces could have been used to make this area look nicer.

Still, the model looks reasonable around the back to swoosh it around in attack mode – although I do wish there was a feature to “lock” the wings in this pose, as although there’s a reasonable amount of friction in the mechanism, it is possible to bump the wings back to cruising mode when flying the model around.

Also, this angle really shows just how exposed the astromech looks in its socket.

Oh, and there’s also a side build of a ladder for minifigures to climb in and disembark.
