{"id":58396,"date":"2026-04-09T19:15:56","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T19:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/58396\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T19:15:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T19:15:56","slug":"ceo-copenhagen-based-gubi-disusses-mastering-design-re-edits-new-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/58396\/","title":{"rendered":"CEO Copenhagen-based Gubi Disusses Mastering Design Re-Edits, New Markets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMILAN \u2014 Copenhagen-based <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/design\/\" id=\"auto-tag_design\" data-tag=\"design\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">design<\/a> firm <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/home-design\/furniture\/design-trends-iconic-revivals-futuristic-2025-1238353655\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gubi<\/a> has a knack for mixing Scandi spirit with Mediterranean vibes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat\u2019s why its latest debut is with Brianza-based luxury rattan <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/furniture\/\" id=\"auto-tag_furniture\" data-tag=\"furniture\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">furniture<\/a> firm Bonacina 1889.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTogether they are reviving the bohemian allure of rattan design with the relaunch of Tito Agnoli\u2019s P3 lounge chair and P3S chaise longue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGubi chief executive officer Marie Kristine Schmidt told WWD on Thursday that re-edits like these, which make up 50 percent of their sales and business, are part of a broader strategy to increase Gubi\u2019s presence in Southern Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFaithful to the original drawings, Gubi brought Tito Agnoli\u2019s P3 designs back into production and, for the first time, introduced an outdoor-ready edition of the P3 lounge chair, crafted in high-performance synthetic rattan in <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/collaboration\/\" id=\"auto-tag_collaboration\" data-tag=\"collaboration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">collaboration<\/a> with Bonacina 1889. Agnoli, who was born in Lima, Peru, to an Italian family, died in 2012. During his career he rose to be the assistant of Gio Ponti and Carlo De Carli and later collaborated with Arflex, Molteni&amp;C and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Nostalgia Trap <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBringing back successes from the past can be tricky, Schmidt said.  It\u2019s essential to evaluate how and if each piece from the past resonates in today\u2019s world.  Curation is also key. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOne half of Gubi\u2019s business is dedicated to archival pieces and the other is dedicated to contemporary design. When approaching a new project, each one undergoes a careful selection process. \u201cWe ask ourselves, \u2018How was this made? Why was it made? What is the actual story? It\u2019s all about staging and curation. Like in your own <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/home\/\" id=\"auto-tag_home\" data-tag=\"home\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">home<\/a>, you don\u2019t want all new, but you don\u2019t want to live in a museum or in a vintage store either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSuch successful collections include the archival pieces of European designers whose works remain fresh today.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-wwd-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GUBI_F300-Lounge-Chair-by-Pierre-Paulin_Campaign_TheOriginalStoryOf_5-e1763569899532.jpg\" alt=\"gubi\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1024\" width=\"819\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tPierre Paulin\u2019s F300 updated by Gubi.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCourtesy of Gubi<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn 2022, Gubi unveiled a re-edit of the late Italian artist and designer <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/home-design\/furniture\/nilufar-fetes-gabriella-crespis-bohemian-icons-1235888529\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gabriella Crespi\u2019s<\/a> bohemian rattan that rose to fame in the 1970s and remain collectors\u2019 pieces to this day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn 2025, Gubi unveiled a remake of the 1960s F300 lounge chair by French <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/designer-3\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">designer<\/a>\u00a0Pierre Paulin, a model that was both sculptural and futuristic in form. Despite the lack of documentation of its manufacturing and materials,\u00a0Gubi presented an updated model optimizing aspects of the old model to meet today\u2019s standards of durability and in a variety of materials and textiles like smooth leather, suede and alpaca.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tReaching New Markets<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGubi is also expanding its showroom presence and plans to open one in Paris, Gubi House Paris, on April 16. Envisioned as a destination for architects and design professionals, the Paris space will host installations, launches and cultural events, offering an immersive entry point into\u00a0Gubi\u2019s design universe in a distinctly Parisian setting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re opening in Paris obviously, because the Southern European markets are very important to Gubi,\u201d Schmidt added, noting that the Paris venue is intended for architects and interior designers to pass by appointment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe new showroom follows those in\u00a0Copenhagen\u00a0and\u00a0London, where their hub is situated in Charterhouse Square. \u201cWe have a beautiful old Georgian townhouse in London, which is a different way of expressing Gubi. So it\u2019s the same DNA in the brand, but obviously in the context of London\u2026,\u201d Schmidt said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDespite the U.S. being Gubi\u2019s largest single market, it currently does not have a monobrand presence in North America. Without expanding its presence in the region, Schmidt said Gubi has a successful retail presence through retail partners like Design Within Reach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe have a good distribution strategy. We have strong partnerships in the U.S. with <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/home-design\/furniture\/salone-del-mobile-2026-abito-fashion-design-exhibit-1238893013\/\" id=\"related_article_link_design\" data-tag=\"design\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Design<\/a> Within Reach, for instance, and they\u2019re the best; they have a lot of coverage,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tContract and hospitality are other areas of growth and the company is showing strength in the hospitality sector in ancillary spaces, hotel lobby areas and meeting rooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn terms of sales, Schmidt added that Gubi posted a flat performance in 2025, in-line with the broader market and even outperforming its peers in light of the ongoing market pressures worldwide. Last year, the firm focused on recalibrating its go-to-market model, especially in Europe, prioritizing a stronger local presence by transitioning to direct employees across the continent.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-wwd-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GUBI_Showroom_2025_Pacha-Outdoor-Lounge-Chair-by-Pierre-Paulin_2.jpg\" alt=\"Gubi \" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGubi presented its alfresco outdoor living concept at 3daysofdesign in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tXavier Butcher<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhat we have to do\u2026 as a business in general, is to really ensure that we capture the momentum, but also [ensure] that we follow the momentum,\u201d Schmidt pointed out, underscoring the need to be agile and build strategic anchors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGrowing in <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/china\/\" id=\"auto-tag_china\" data-tag=\"china\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGubi also established a team in <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/designer-luxury\/shanghai-fall-26-buyer-roundup-1238892913\/\" id=\"related_article_link_china\" data-tag=\"china\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a> in 2021 and is steadily building its platform there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think the misunderstanding is some think you can go in and out of China fast. It\u2019s a long-term investment like any other market, honestly. And you need to establish a team, you need to build strong partnerships\u2026brand awareness exercises as well,\u201d she said. Unlike Italian and French brands positioned in the luxury end of the market, Gubi offers an alternative to many of the same leading designers at an accessible price point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe offer a very good price for value, and I think that that has opened up an opportunity for a brand like ours in China,\u201d she contended. The P3 chaise longue, for example, is priced at 1,399 euros and the lounge chair is priced at 1,099 euros.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe partnership with Bonacina 1889 is also an opportunity to flex Gubi\u2019s style muscle in the premium end of the market. \u201cBonacina does products that are very premium priced compared to where Gubi plays. And this is also an opportunity for them to expand their story to a different audience,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMilan\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/home-design\/furniture\/dimorestudios-bonacina-furniture-collaboration-1238526857\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dimorestudio<\/a>\u00a0most recently put a new spin on the rattan that Bonacina has been producing since 1889.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/home-design\/furniture\/dimorestudio-founders-expand-global-reach-interni-venosta-collection-1236720223\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dimorestudio<\/a>, which was founded by design duo Britt Moran and Emiliano Salci, has designed a series of 1970s-inspired pieces in cottonwood and lacquer. Named Punta Ala, after the Tuscan seaside resort, the array also borrowed from that region\u2019s coastal culture and its landscape. The partnership with Gubi was a strategic move for Bonacina 1889 as well, explained Elia Bonacina, family member and CEO.
