While the government wants to remove those limits, several opposition parties insist they should stay.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t &#13;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helsinkitimes.fi\/finland\/finland-news\/politics\/28596-finland-plans-to-lift-nuclear-weapons-import-ban.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">proposed changes <\/a>are part of a broader update to Finland\u2019s foreign and security policy, driven by shifts in the global security environment and the country\u2019s role within NATO. The government plans to submit its updated policy statement to parliament next week.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Under the proposal, Finland would align more closely with NATO\u2019s nuclear deterrence framework while maintaining key safeguards. Orpo emphasized that Finland would not host nuclear weapons during peacetime and would remain committed to international treaties such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt its core, the policy is clear: Finland will not become a nuclear weapons state, and no nuclear weapons will be stationed here in normal conditions,\u201d Orpo said after the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>However, the government argues that removing legal restrictions is necessary to ensure flexibility in crisis situations and to fully integrate with NATO\u2019s defense planning. Critics say this creates too much ambiguity and weakens existing safeguards.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Opposition parties including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helsinkitimes.fi\/finland\/finland-news\/politics\/28624-lindtman-urges-halt-to-finland-nuclear-law-change.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Social Democrats<\/a>, the Left Alliance and the Greens have rejected the government\u2019s approach, calling for explicit legal prohibitions rather than policy-level commitments.
