Greenland<\/a> Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen<\/a> called on NATO<\/a> allies to stand together to defend international law on Thursday as he hit back against U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> latest comments about the Arctic island.<\/p>\n

In a post on social media earlier this week, Trump criticized NATO\u2019s unwillingness to get involved in the war on Iran<\/a>, saying that the military alliance was not around when the U.S. \u201cneeded them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNATO WASN\u2019T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON\u2019T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN. REMEMBER GREENLAND, THAT BIG, POORLY RUN, PIECE OF ICE!!! President DJT,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Nielsen rejected Trump\u2019s comments that Greenland is a \u201cpoorly run, piece of ice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not some piece of ice. We are a proud \u2060population of 57,000 people, working every single day as good global citizens in full respect for all our allies,\u201d \u200bhe told Reuters.<\/p>\n

He went on to emphasize the importance of maintaining the post-war geopolitical order, including the NATO defence alliance and globally respected \u200binternational law.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose things are being challenged now, and I think all allies should stand together to try to maintain them. I hope that will happen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Nielsen has responded to Trump\u2019s comments about Greenland.<\/p>\n

Greenland\u2019s leader said \u201cenough is enough<\/a>\u201d after Trump renewed his threats to take over the territory in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cThreats, pressure, and talk of annexation do not belong anywhere between friends,\u201d Nielsen said on Facebook<\/a> on Jan. 4. \u201cThat\u2019s not how you talk to people who have repeatedly shown responsibility, stability and loyalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnough is enough. No more pressure. No more hints. No more fantasies about annexation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nielsen said Greenland is \u201copen for dialogue\u201d and \u201copen to conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also\u00a0addressed a photo<\/a> that Katie Miller, the wife of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, posted on X<\/a> of the territory covered with the American flag, writing, \u201cSOON.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst and foremost, let me say calmly and clearly, that there is neither reason for panic nor for insecurity,\u201d Nielsen wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe photo shared by Katie Miller of Greenland being produced wrapped in an American flag doesn\u2019t change anything. Our country is not for sale and our future is not determined by social media posts,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the picture is disrespectful. The relations between countries and people are based on respect and on international law and not on symbolic markings that ignore our status and our rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no need to panic. But there\u2019s good reason to speak up against the lack of respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly called for U.S. jurisdiction over Greenland, and has pointedly not ruled out military force to take control of the mineral-rich, strategically located Arctic island that belongs to an ally.<\/p>\n

Trump said in January that<\/a> anything less than the Arctic island being in U.S. hands would be \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

During an unrelated event at the White House about rural health care, he recounted how he had threatened European allies with tariffs<\/a> on pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n

\u201cI may do that for Greenland too,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI may put a tariff on countries if they don\u2019t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security. So I may do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

European leaders have insisted that it is only for Denmark and Greenland to decide on matters concerning the territory<\/a>, and Denmark said it was increasing its military presence<\/a> in Greenland in co-operation with allies.<\/p>\n

In December 2025, Trump said the U.S. is\u00a0not interested in Greenland for its mineral wealth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have so many sites for minerals and oil and everything. We have more oil than any other country in the world,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe\u2019ll have to work it all out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0initially voiced his interest<\/a> in Greenland in 2019 during his first term in office. He said Greenland was \u201churting Denmark very badly\u201d and costing it US$700 million a year. His solution was to have the United States acquire Greenland, calling it \u201ca large real estate deal.\u201d<\/p>\n
