WARSAW, Ind. (WNDU) – Several NIPSCO customers were in the dark for about 18 hours following a power outage. <\/p>\n
This comes during an ongoing lockout. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s been about two weeks since NIPSCO shut out nearly 1,600 workers<\/a> represented by the United Steelworker\u2019s Union.<\/p>\n We were at one of the NIPSCO headquarters in South Bend.<\/p>\n Some workers represented by United Steelworkers Union were picketing against NIPSCO\u2019s lock out decision.<\/p>\n Most of the employees are line workers, who often handle power outages and emergencies.<\/p>\n And some people in Warsaw say they were left without power for 18 hours.<\/p>\n It was Monday morning when people near Henderson Drive and West Baker Street heard a blaring sound like an explosion.<\/p>\n \u201cWe just heard a loud boom,\u201d said Herschel Sears a Warsaw resident. \u201cPower trucks were down the street. And the telephone pole was in two pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n Homes along West Baker Street and Southwest Point Drive lost power.<\/p>\n \u201cThey still didn\u2019t have power at like 10 p.m. at night,\u201d said Sears.<\/p>\n Neighbors say their electricity wasn\u2019t restored until around 6 a.m. Tuesday.<\/p>\n All of this comes after NIPSCO locked out the workers represented by United Steelworkers Union about two weeks ago.<\/p>\n Many of the employees are line workers who typically respond to outages and emergencies like this.<\/p>\n Neighbors say NIPSCO crews didn\u2019t arrive for hours and for some residents, this outage was more than an inconvenience.<\/p>\n Patricia Hygema, says she depends on a medical device.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a CPAP machine. It helps me breathe at night, because I have asthma,\u201d said Hygema.<\/p>\n The 80-year-old says her doctor told her she\u2019s okay after the outage, but she\u2019s worried about what could happen if it lasts longer next time.<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, if I lose power for a day or two, yeah, it will eventually affect my health,\u201d said Hygema. \u201cIt is a strain when I don\u2019t have it because that does help me sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n Hygema says she wants NIPSCO and the Steelworker\u2019s Union to reach a fair agreement.<\/p>\n \u201cRight. I think they need to negotiate fairly with the people and give them fair wages. They put their lives on the line when they climb those poles,\u201d said Hygema.<\/p>\n We reached out to one of the representatives from the Steelworkers\u2019 Union, and he says there\u2019s still no set timeline for the negotiation.<\/p>\n Stay up to date on local news with WNDU<\/a> on-air and online.
