The Stockholm Games were the fifth occurrence of the modern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/Olympic-Games\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Olympic Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">Known as the \u201cSwedish Masterpiece,\u201d the 1912 Olympics were the best organized and most efficiently run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/Summer-Olympic-Games\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Games<\/a> to that date. Electronic timing devices and a public address system were used for the first time. The Games drew approximately 2,400 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/list-of-Summer-Olympic-athletes\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">athletes<\/a> representing 28 countries. New competitions included the modern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/pentathlon\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pentathlon<\/a> and swimming and diving events for women. Entered in four events, he began slowly with a fourth-place finish in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/high-jump\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high jump<\/a> and a seventh-place finish in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/long-jump\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long jump<\/a>. In the pentathlon and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/decathlon\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decathlon<\/a>, however, Thorpe dominated the events to win two gold medals. The track-and-field competition also featured the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/long-distance-running\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long-distance running<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Hannes-Kolehmainen\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hannes Kolehmainen<\/a> of Finland, who won gold medals in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs and the 12,000-meter cross-country race.
