Approval from authorities in Nuuk clears the transfer of the remaining stake in the Tanbreez project to Critical Metals Corp., paving the way for operational launch. Critical Metals now holds 50.5% of the mine, giving it and European Lithium control over one of the world’s largest deposits of heavy rare earths.

Financially robust yet facing auditor warnings, European Lithium is deploying its substantial war chest. The company recently launched a share buyback program to acquire up to 135 million of its own shares, representing 10% of its issued capital, by October. Management cites fundamental undervaluation as the rationale. The move is easily funded, with estimated costs of around A$12.6 million, following a partial sale of its Critical Metals stake that netted approximately A$124 million. The company now holds cash reserves of A$322 million and retains a CRML shareholding valued at over $689 million.

Operational plans are now accelerating. The pilot processing plant in Qaqortoq is scheduled to commence operations in May 2026. A 30 million US dollar acceleration program is in place to expand the resource base significantly. For June, the company plans a 150-tonne bulk sample program to ship material to potential off-takers in Europe, the US, and Saudi Arabia. Recent metallurgical tests have been encouraging, confirming a rare earth concentrate grade of nearly three percent, surpassing historical estimates.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying European Lithium?

The commercial pathway for Tanbreez’s output is already secured. Critical Metals has signed a letter of intent for a joint venture with Saudi Arabian partner TQB to build a fully integrated supply chain from mine to processing. The anticipated investment could reach $1.5 billion. Under the deal, Critical Metals retains its 50% interest without contributing capital for the processing plant construction and has a long-term off-take agreement for a quarter of the production. This effectively contracts the project’s entire future output.

However, this progress contrasts with challenges elsewhere. The Wolfsberg lithium project in Austria remains stalled, with a final investment decision alongside partner Obeikan delayed until at least the end of 2026 due to legal challenges from local residents. Furthermore, the company’s auditors have issued going-concern warnings for the 2024 and 2025 financial statements, pointing to negative working capital and ongoing operational losses at the holding company level.

The broader market context offers a tailwind, with prices for battery-grade lithium carbonate more than doubling in the first quarter to over $26,000 per tonne. Western financial backing is also emerging, with the US Export-Import Bank signaling interest in providing up to $120 million in financing, part of a broader push to reduce reliance on China, which currently controls about 90% of global processing. The coming months will test whether operational milestones in Greenland can finally outweigh the persistent concerns flagged by its accountants.

Ad

European Lithium Stock: New Analysis – 18 April

Fresh European Lithium information released.
