The latest schedule filings to Cirium Diio and OAG confirm four route suspensions for Emirates and three for Qatar Airways.

These changes add to earlier disruptions. Qatar Airways has grounded its entire A380 subfleet throughout April and May. Emirates has seen its A380 flights fall by a third year-over-year, partly due to ongoing cabin reconfiguration work on its superjumbos, Simple Flying reported.

Photo: Kevin Hackert | Flickr

Emirates, Qatar Airways Cut A380 Routes

Emirates will not operate the A380 from Dubai (DXB) to Copenhagen (CPH), Glasgow (GLA), Osaka Kansai (KIX), or Prague (PRG) in May. Only that month is currently affected, though the suspension will likely extend into June.

Each route had a different A380 configuration planned. Copenhagen and Prague were scheduled for the two-class, 615-seat layout without first class. Glasgow was set to receive the 519-seat, four-class variant with first class. Osaka was assigned the 468-seat configuration, which is the carrier’s lowest-capacity A380 setup.

Replacement aircraft vary by route. The Boeing 777-300ER will cover three of the four routes: a 328-seat variant for Osaka, a 332-seat variant for Glasgow, and a 360-seat variant for Prague. All three are four-class aircraft. Copenhagen is the exception.

Emirates will deploy its three-class, 298-seat Airbus A350-900, the airline’s lowest-capacity widebody.

Shifting from a 615-seat A380 to a 298-seat A350 represents a significant capacity reduction on that route. Regular A350 service to Copenhagen is already planned from late October onward.

Emirates Airbus A380 | Photo: Clément Alloing

Emirates Adjusts A380 Frequencies on European and Asian Routes

Beyond full route suspensions, Emirates has made notable frequency changes. A380 services from Dubai to Milan Malpensa (MXP), Munich (MUC), and Zurich (ZRH) will be halved to once daily each in May. For Milan, this affects the standalone terminator flight, not the fifth-freedom service to New York JFK (JFK).

London Gatwick (LGW) moves in the opposite direction. A380 flights will increase from two to three daily in May, marking the highest frequency since December.

Bali (DPS) also sees growth, with Emirates doubling A380 services to twice daily from May onward.

Photo: By Anna Zvereva from Tallinn, Estonia – Qatar Airways, A7-APJ, Airbus A380-861, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=87491609

Qatar Airways Pulls A380 From Paris, Singapore, and Sydney Through Summer

Qatar Airways faces deeper cuts. With no A380 flights in April or May, the latest changes affect June through August.

The airline has removed superjumbo services from Doha (DOH) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Singapore (SIN), and Sydney (SYD) for the entire summer period. The 517-seat A380 is currently scheduled to return on these routes from September 16.

Replacement equipment includes the 354-seat Boeing 777-300ER for Paris CDG. Singapore will see a mix of the 283-seat A350-900 and 327-seat A350-1000. Sydney gets the 327-seat A350-1000.

Qatar Airways will still operate the A380 to London Heathrow (LHR) from June 16, but with increased frequency. The type will now run twice daily instead of once, continuing through July and August. Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) also sees an upgrade from the originally planned ten-weekly service to twice-daily A380 operations starting June 16.

Photo: By Mitchul Hope – Etihad Airways | A6-APB | Airbus A380-861 | London Heathrow Airport (LHR/EGLL), CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=129305775

Etihad Airways Also Scales Back A380 Deployment

Etihad Airways (EY), the third Middle Eastern A380 operator, has also adjusted its plans. The airline originally intended to launch daily 486-seat A380 service from Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Singapore Changi (SIN) at the end of April. That start date has now shifted to June 15, with operations continuing through 2027.

Comparing May through August schedules against the same period last year, Etihad’s A380 offering has dropped by 10%. Emirates has actually grown its A380 services by 3%, largely because June through August remains relatively unaffected.

Qatar Airways faces the steepest decline at 59% fewer total A380 flights through August. Even excluding the full May grounding, Qatar’s June through August services have nearly halved, falling 48% year-over-year.

Stay tuned with us.
