COPENHAGEN, April 8 (Reuters) – Maersk said on Wednesday the two-week ceasefire agreed between the U.S. and Iran could open some \u200copportunities for vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, but did \u200cnot yet provide enough security certainty to resume normal operations.<\/p>\n
“At this point, we take a \u200bcautious approach, and we are not making any changes to specific services,” the Danish shipping group said in a statement to Reuters.<\/p>\n
The war that began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran in February, followed by Iranian attacks \u200cacross the region and the \u2060closing of the Strait of Hormuz, has brought shipping in the Gulf to a near standstill, rippling across \u2060global supply chains.<\/p>\n
Maersk, one of the world’s biggest container shipping groups, last month suspended cargo bookings to many ports in the Gulf region and introduced \u200bemergency \u200bbunker fuel surcharges around the world \u200bto compensate for rising fuel \u200ccosts.<\/p>\n
NO ‘FULL MARITIME CERTAINTY’ YET FROM CEASEFIRE<\/p>\n
“The ceasefire may create transit opportunities, but it does not yet provide full maritime certainty and we need to understand all potential conditions attached,” Maersk said.<\/p>\n
“Any decision to transit the Strait of Hormuz will be based on continuous risk assessments, close monitoring \u200cof the security situation, and available guidance \u200bfrom relevant authorities and partners,” it said.<\/p>\n
The \u200bcompany has used a “land-bridge” system \u200bvia ports in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Salalah and \u200cSohar in Oman, and Khor \u200bFakkan in the United \u200bArab Emirates, to funnel in cargo before moving it by land to destinations across the Gulf region.<\/p>\n
“We will continue to monitor \u200bdevelopments closely and provide \u200cupdates as greater clarity emerges over the coming hours and \u200bdays,” it said.<\/p>\n
