Critical Metals Corp, in which European Lithium holds a 37.5% stake, has named local industry veteran Thomas Mogensen as CEO of the Tanbreez Mining project. This move follows the recent finalization of the project’s ownership structure and marks a transition from planning to operational execution.

The Australian-listed company’s shares surged 12.25% to 27.5 Australian cents on Monday, bringing its year-to-date gain to approximately 80%. This rally was triggered by the Greenland government’s formal approval for transferring the remaining 50.5% interest in the Tanbreez project to Critical Metals. The strategic partner now controls 92.5% of the venture, with European Lithium retaining a direct, free-carried 7.5% stake.

Mogensen brings significant regional expertise, having recently turned around Greenland’s economic development agency Nalik Ventures from a multi-million dollar loss to a solid profit. His appointment comes as the project moves from exploration into active development, with a clear operational timeline now in focus. The pilot plant in Qaqortoq is ready for commissioning, pending final regulatory approval expected in May.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying European Lithium?

The consolidation of ownership under Critical Metals is viewed as a critical step for Western supply chain security. Chairman Tony Sage called the government approval a milestone, eliminating a key financing obstacle by providing clarity for potential capital providers. Tanbreez is considered one of the world’s largest heavy rare earth deposits, containing materials like terbium and dysprosium essential for electric vehicle motors and defense technology.

Technical progress supports the ambitious schedule. Metallurgical tests in March showed a 40% increase in rare earth content within the concentrate, with recovery rates exceeding 85% for all eight high-demand elements. A comprehensive test program on a 150-tonne bulk sample is slated for June. Concurrently, discussions are underway with potential offtake partners from the US, Europe, and Saudi Arabia, each slated to receive at least ten tonnes of a high-grade pre-concentrate.

Financially, European Lithium is well-positioned for upcoming milestones. Its cash reserves have swelled to around A$356 million following a partial sale of its Critical Metals shares. The company has also initiated a buyback program to repurchase up to 10% of its shares on issue. However, the company faces operational challenges elsewhere. Its Wolfsberg lithium project in Austria is delayed due to community objections, pushing a final investment decision with partner Obeikan to late 2026, though the mining license was recently extended by two years.

Auditors have also raised going-concern doubts for the past two fiscal years, with the group reporting a loss exceeding $71 million in FY2025. The performance of the Tanbreez pilot plant, with first results anticipated by mid-2026, represents the next major test for the company’s valuation. With restructuring complete and a new CEO at the helm, the focus is squarely on scaling up and converting strong lab results and letters of intent into binding commercial agreements.

Ad

European Lithium Stock: New Analysis – 21 April

Fresh European Lithium information released.
