Police say 37 people were on board the trains, which collided at a level crossing between Hiller\u00f8d and Kagerup in North Zealand just after 6:30am local time, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cgqkw3qk0dlo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a>. All of the injured were taken to hospitals by air or ambulance, with the most seriously hurt flown to the National Hospital in Copenhagen, about 20 miles away. Photos showed one of the trains &#8220;substantially crushed at the front,&#8221; per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/apr\/23\/train-collision-denmark-near-copenhagen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian<\/a>. A fire and rescue official described &#8220;broken glass flying everywhere.&#8221;&#13;\n                                    <\/p>\n<p class=\"storyParagraph\">&#13;<br \/>\n                                        Authorities have not yet determined why the trains ended up on the same track. Denmark&#8217;s Accident Investigation Board is examining possibilities ranging from a signaling malfunction to human error. An expert quoted by Danish media suggested one driver may have overridden a station stop signal, per the BBC. Gribskov Municipality Mayor Trine Egetved called the crash shocking and said the busy local line is heavily used by workers and students. The safety director of Lokaltog, the line&#8217;s operator, described the collision as among the worst scenarios in rail operations, noting that staff were among the injured.
