Five people have been left fighting for their life with a further 11 injured after two trains collided in Denmark.<\/p>\n

Emergency personnel from the Greater Copenhagen Fire Department rushed to the scene near Hillerod, roughly 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Copenhagen. Police have declared it a major accident<\/a>. Initially they claimed only four people were critically injured but this figure was later updated to five.<\/p>\n

All passengers have since been evacuated from both trains, a spokesperson for the North Zealand police confirmed. There were 38 people aboard the two trains, police confirmed. Dramatic photos <\/a>from the scene show the front ends of both trains severely damaged, though remarkably, both remained upright on the tracks.<\/p>\n

A police spokesperson said: “There were no people trapped, but we provided first aid, and together with the civilians and emergency responders, we carried them out and secured the train. That was the end of our work.”<\/p>\n

Trine Egetved, the mayor of the nearby town of Gribskov, revealed via Facebook that some of the injured were airlifted to the hospital.<\/p>\n

Chief physician Anders Hejmdal in a local emergency department said: “We have had enough resources to handle the number of injured people. We have had the Danish Armed Forces rescue helicopter in action to transport them to Rigshospitalet, which receives the most injured people.”<\/p>\n

“A total of 17 people have been injured, five are assessed as being in critical condition. We have an overview of all of them now.”<\/p>\n

He also emphasized that “the situation is dynamic,” Politiken reports.<\/p>\n

The mayor of Denmark’s Gribskov municipality, Trine Egetved, said on Facebook: “I am deeply shaken and shocked and thinking of all those involved. The local railway is used by many Gribskov citizens, employees and schoolchildren.”<\/p>\n

They told public broadcaster DR that it was shocking, “and we must ensure it never happens again”.<\/p>\n

Further details surrounding the incident have yet to be released. Tim Ole Simonsen of the Greater Copenhagen fire department was unable to say what led to the crash.<\/p>\n

It comes after one person died and 27 were injured after a train collided with a slurry tanker and derailed in southern Denmark, near the German border, in August last year.<\/p>\n
