With The Mandalorian and Grogu set to hit theaters next month, this year\u2019s UCS release for May the Fourth is expectedly Mando-themed\u2026.but it\u2019s not the gray ship you\u2019ve been seeing all over the film\u2019s marketing. After all, ship whiplash is kind of Din Djarin\u2019s thing. LEGO originally released the UCS Razor Crest in 2022 \u2013 right before that ship was completely obliterated in The Mandalorian Season 2. Now that Mando appears to be ditching his N-1 for a new version of the Razor Crest, it\u2019s only fitting that this May\u2019s UCS release is 75442 The Mandalorian\u2019s N-1 Starfighter. Did we mention that Mando didn\u2019t even acquire this ship in his own show? (Sorry, Boba). Regardless of its origins or whether or not it will actually appear in the upcoming film, we were looking forward to seeing how this ship turned out at a larger scale. Read on to see if it reaches \u2018wizard\u2019 status!<\/p>\n

The Box and Contents<\/p>\n

Our box is another adult-marketed black box, with not much notable aside from some stills from the show on the back side. I generally prefer more colorful box art, and with the upcoming film tie-in it seems like there could have been an opportunity to make this look a bit more exciting \u2013 but it\u2019s just a box, after all.<\/p>\n

Inside we\u2019re greeted with 16 paper bags (most of which also contain smaller paper bags), making this set a fully recyclable package! It\u2019s really nice to see this project come to fruition and to not have to dispose of single-use plastic any longer. Loose contents within are the printed UCS plaque, some hoses, and a smaller bag that contains the new windshield piece. The printing on the UCS plaque is excellent, and not having to apply this as a sticker almost makes all of the other stickers worth it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve also got a single hefty instructions booklet, which is also fairly minimal but does contain a cool split wingspan of the final model.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t
<\/p>\n

As is typical for these larger sets, the instructions contain a good bit of preamble with some great photos and quotes from the design team.<\/p>\n

It also contains a stunning photo of the yellow Naboo N-1, which many of us have already thought about converting this set into.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t
<\/p>\n

Our sticker sheet for this set contains 18 stickers, which is a bit disappointing at this premium price point. The plaque, minifigures, and 2 engine interior discs are the only printed elements in the set.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Build<\/p>\n

Aside from it being a new ship, one of the key differences between this UCS model and the other gray ships that have come before it is the use of drum-lacquered silver parts for the iconic front of the N-1. This is the first thing that caught my eye when I saw the set reveal, as LEGO has typically relied on gray parts for silver elements in recent models. With that said, I was surprised to be immediately greeted with a plethora of beautiful silver parts straight out of the gate in Bag 1.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In the first bag, we begin by constructing the right front of the ship. There is some clever use of hinge plates and spacing here, with multiple different sections that come together to give us the final shape. This is a trend that continues throughout the build.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a>
\n\t\t\t
<\/p>\n

The second bag is almost a mirror copy \u2013 but not quite. Given that the ship that Peli Motto put together was a bit of a refurbished model, there are several instances throughout this build where one side is slightly different than the other. These can be more drastic like in some of the stickers or side panels, or can be more subtle like the single 1\u00d71 silver tile reflected on the left side of the ship here.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

With the front of the ship mostly complete, bags 3 and 4 begin to lay the foundation for the rest of the build. We assemble the guts of the back half of the ship that will connect to the front with a ton of technic pins for stability. We also assemble a neat little structure out of mixels joins that provides some SNOT and ball joint opportunities when we round out the underside later on.<\/p>\n

The sixth bag is the first time that I realized how massive this model was going to be. Working with just the front and the cockpit, this felt at a pretty manageable scale \u2013 but assembling and connecting the tail completely changed my perspective. Even at this point, this model is already roughly the same length as Rivendell and when upside down is almost as tall as Barad-D\u00fbr (rough eyeball measurements only, of course). The tail also utilizes some cool slope parts.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a>
\n\t\t\t
<\/p>\n

The next assembly is the left side of the ship, which is once again shaped with some good use of spacing and hinge plates. This build uses a variety of techniques to capture the smooth roundness of the N-1, from various sloped parts to staggered wedge plates like the section below. The entire left assembly is connected to our main build using 3 mixels joints, and is quite sturdy.<\/p>\n

The right side of the ship is mostly similar, with a few assembly and detail differences to mark the asymmetry. This section of the build contains my absolute favorite part usage: 6 Super Battle Droid arms to represent the guts of the ship peeking out through an opening.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

These are loosely slotted into the build on a bar with a jumper plate attached, and are then held in place by the surrounding parts. It\u2019s a fun build, and looks really nice in this finished section.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We\u2019re on bag 9 now, and we\u2019ll take a moment to flip this ship upside down to finish out the underside. By using the SNOT contraption we assembled earlier, we\u2019ve got a variety of slope and inverted slope parts that we\u2019ll use here to capture the roundness of the underside. There are some cool sloped parts I hadn\u2019t worked with before here, as well as a really nice large triangular tile.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a>
\n\t\t\t
<\/p>\n

Now that we\u2019re finished with the underside and won\u2019t need to flip the model over anymore, we can start to assemble some of the more fragile parts on top \u2013 most notably the new cockpit windshield, Grogu\u2019s dome, and a stickered part at the top of the main weapon system. We also build out the rest of the cockpit and the twin cannons here. I typically prefer minifig-scale sets, but seeing the level of detail that was able to be captured here in the cockpit with the handles and leather chair sections made me appreciate this scale.<\/p>\n

The new windshield part is incredible, and the main reason I can\u2019t stop thinking about doing a yellow N-1. My only issue with it was having to apply a tiny sticker to the most rounded portion of it, which had me sweating bullets like when Migs Mayfeld wouldn\u2019t stop talking to the Imperial officer on Morak.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a>
\n\t\t\t
<\/p>\n

Bag 11 is a break from the ship assembly as we put together the black UCS stand that will keep this thing from flying off our shelves. We\u2019re also introduced to our first minifigure here: The Mandalorian himself. We\u2019ll take a closer look at him later.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a>
\n\t\t\t
<\/p>\n

The very next bag gives us his tiny sidekick and the star of the show, the new Grogu mold. Once again, more to come on that later. The remainder of this next section is focused on the engine assembly, and we\u2019re greeted with some neat parts like the trans blue circular plate below.<\/p>\n

The final four bags focus on the twin engines: 13 and 14 on the left side, and 15 and 16 on the right side. There\u2019s a lot to love here, including a wonderful section of parts (the photo here was taken just cool parts from Bag 14).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

There is some surprising complexity to these engine builds, with the final goal seemingly being to show the open sections and all of the mechanical internals while still remaining sturdy and stable. As with the other sections, there are several differences between these two builds that makes it a much more enjoyable building process. The use of gray Darksabers and Uruk-hai swords among other parts here really make it feel like you\u2019re peering into the inside of the ship on the finished model.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t
<\/p>\n

The Minifigures<\/p>\n

Neither of the minifigures in this set contain exclusive parts, so there\u2019s less exciting news to write about here than usual. Din Djarin contains his new leg printing for the film sets, and his updated helmet design that still looks drastically better than the first iteration. I was slightly surprised to see that his hair is not included, especially considering that it was included in the UCS Razor Crest and is exclusive to that set.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This version of Grogu appears in 75444 AT-RT Attack, but it was my first time seeing the new mold in person. As someone that has way too many of the original Grogu mold, this one is a clear upgrade in every way. By using the same head, they\u2019ve managed to keep the LEGO-esque charm of the original minifig without the non-Grogu baby elements. My kids both have the older mold and find this one much cuter.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

All in all, there\u2019s nothing incredibly disappointing or awe-inspiring about these choices. These are the two minifigs that make sense for this set, and they\u2019re both their newest iterations. I do think including Din\u2019s hair or some other element to make it feel somehow more like a \u2018premium\u2019 upgrade from the smaller playsets would have been nice.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Finished Model<\/p>\n

Our final build is another excellent entry in the UCS starship series. The entire ship feels and looks much larger than I anticipated and looks nice from all angles.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The shaping of the N-1 is especially tricky in LEGO, given the gradual curves and sleek smoothness of the in-universe ship. This is far from the first time that we\u2019ve seen an official N-1 build, but this is the first time that it feels like the shaping was truly captured.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The stand is designed in such a way that the ship can be positioned in 3 different directions: forward, left, and right facing. All 3 positions look great, even if the minifigures are slightly obscured in some of them (let\u2019s be honest, they\u2019re not the focus here).<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a>
\n\t\t\t
<\/p>\n

Despite being so large, it\u2019s also quite swooshable. The entire model is held together very well, which makes it very comfortable to hold and move around. The hole on the underside used for connecting the ship to the stand conveniently works very well as an anchor point when carrying it around.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/a>
\n\t\t\t
<\/p>\n

Final Thoughts<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be honest, I wasn\u2019t expecting to enjoy the build process and final model as much as I did. I have a little bit of Mando fatigue, and even more fatigue for all-gray ships (this is a Star Wars problem more than a LEGO problem). I was half expecting this build to feel very familiar to other builds I\u2019ve done, and was also expecting building both sides of this ship to feel slightly repetitive. Thankfully, neither was the case. This set introduces some different parts and build techniques, and builds the different sections so subtly different that nothing ever feels too repetitive. The larger scale also helps extensively here, as we end up with a model that truly captures the smoothness of the N-1 angles more than any prior model.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The drum-lacquered silver parts are the shining feature of this build (no pun intended), and they really pop more in person than they do on the box art. I was surprised to see this amount of silver parts, and the quantity and variety actually do make this feel more like a premium product than some other sets.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The minifigures are not the selling point of the set, and I do think including Din Djarin\u2019s hair piece or some other accessories to separate these figures from the playset line would have been nice. It\u2019s also disappointing to have an entire UCS starship model with only 2 printed elements and 18 stickers to apply. I\u2019m sure I\u2019m not alone in being okay with paying more for printed elements.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The set is $249.99, which is undoubtedly a hefty price tag. The piece count to dollar ratio isn\u2019t great, but that\u2019s an aging metric that doesn\u2019t always translate well to bigger sets with larger parts. The set certainly looks premium and imposing in person, as it occupies roughly the same amount of shelf space as my Rivendell display. Jango Fett\u2019s Firespray-Class Starship (2025\u2019s May the Fourth release) is $299.99 and has minifig exclusivity, more interactive elements, and a lot more color. With that said, the size of the build itself doesn\u2019t necessarily make the N-1 look like a bad value by comparison. Compared to the UCS AT-ST Walker ($199.99) and the UCS TIE Interceptor ($229.99), I do think the N-1 appears to be an upgrade in terms of size and aesthetic (the drum-lacquered silver parts really help set it apart here). The price tag is large, but I think this is one of the better gray UCS models available at the moment. We didn\u2019t receive the Darksaber or other GWP items, but that\u2019s also something to factor in as you make your decision.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So, is it wizard? I think so. Din Djarin seems to think so. We\u2019ll see if The Mandalorian and Grogu thinks so.<\/p>\n
