A Turkish court on Thursday handed down<\/a> a five-month suspended sentence to journalist Tolga \u015eardan for publicly insulting the state\u2019s judicial organs in an article reporting on alleged corruption in the judiciary.<\/p>\n

According to the T24 news website, the \u0130stanbul 2nd Court of First Instance acquitted \u015eardan of a separate charge of publicly disseminating misleading information.<\/p>\n

The case stemmed from an October 2023 article in which \u015eardan revealed the existence of a report by Turkey\u2019s National Intelligence Organization (M\u0130T) detailing allegations of corruption, nepotism and other irregularities within the judiciary.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0article\u00a0\u015eardan said the M\u0130T report was submitted to President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan. He was detained in November 2023 and held in\u00a0pretrial detention<\/a>\u00a0for five days.<\/p>\n

Press freedom advocates say the case reflects Turkey\u2019s continued use of criminal charges, including insult and disinformation offenses, to pressure journalists reporting on politically sensitive issues.<\/p>\n

According to Expression Interrupted, a press freedom monitoring group, 26 journalists\u00a0are<\/a>\u00a0currently behind bars in Turkey. The country\u2019s deteriorating media landscape was further pointed out in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), where it was\u00a0ranked<\/a>\u00a0163rd out of 180 nations.<\/p>\n
