{"id":74643,"date":"2026-05-04T19:18:51","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T19:18:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/74643\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T19:18:51","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T19:18:51","slug":"amsterdam-bans-ads-for-meat-and-more-to-combat-climate-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/74643\/","title":{"rendered":"Amsterdam bans ads for meat and more to combat &#8216;climate crisis&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The capital city of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/netherlands\/\">Netherlands<\/a> will no longer allow public ads for meat, gas-powered vehicles, commercial airlines, or other high-carbon-producing products.<\/p>\n<p>Amsterdam rolled out the ban this month to alter social attitudes toward products lawmakers believe contribute to a growing \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/climate-change\/\">climate crisis<\/a>.\u201d Left-wing parties GreenLeft and Party for the Animals led the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe climate crisis is very urgent,\u201d GreenLeft Party member Anneke Veenhoff said of the ban. \u201cIf you want to be leading in climate policies and you rent out your walls to exactly the opposite, then what are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"594\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-2232981997.jpg\" alt=\"McDonalds in Amsterdam\" class=\"wp-image-4554237\"  \/>Shoppers pass a McDonald\u2019s fast-food restaurant on Kalverstraat in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025. (Lina Selg\/Bloomberg via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The ban was first approved by a city council vote in January, but implementation was held up in court after a Dutch trade association and several travel agencies lodged complaints that it violated freedom of speech principles and European consumer law.<\/p>\n<p>The district court of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hague\/\">The Hague<\/a> ruled late last month that the ban was justified by the \u201cgeneral health interests of citizens\u201d and that the court was not in a position to overrule the vote for the sake of advertisers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not up to the Municipality to refrain from taking measures to promote the health of its residents in order to strengthen the future [financial] position of travel providers,\u201d the ruling stated.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters say removing advertisements that entice bystanders on the street or in the subway will help the city reach its goal of total carbon neutrality by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Leaning on the supposed health benefits of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/carbon\/\">carbon reduction<\/a>, proponents have also compared the ban to municipal policies against tobacco advertising.<\/p>\n<p>Party for the Animals member Anke Bakker <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c9wejdekpwyo\">told the BBC<\/a> that the new law is actually \u201cgiving people more freedom\u201d because \u201cthey can make their own choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody can just make their own decisions, but actually we are trying to get the big companies not to tell us all the time what we need to eat and buy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Party for the Animals <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.partyfortheanimals.com\/en\/who-we-are\">describes itself<\/a> as the \u201cfirst successful political party in the world that does not put the short-term interests of man in the pivotal position.\u201d The party asserts, \u201cAfter the liberation of enslaved people and women, and giving rights to children, the next logical step is to take the interests of animals seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/energy-and-environment\/4545545\/zeldin-delauro-spar-climate-change-doctrine\/\">ZELDIN AND DELAURO SPAR OVER CLIMATE CHANGE DOCTRINE: \u2018YOU THINK I MADE UP THESE CASES?\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Robert Barker, a deputy mayor and alderman of The Hague, is also a member of the Party for Animals. He believes the ruling will now liberate municipalities across the country to implement similar bans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis court ruling marks a milestone.
