Well, get ready because Brussels has decided to get serious about this. Inspections in Spain and the rest of the EU are about to change in a way that will make your car think twice before passing the test.

The idea is that not only the classic emission levels or brake conditions are checked, but also batteries and ADAS systems (those gadgets your car boasts about with technological features that don’t always work as they should).

Brussels toughens the MOT in Spain

The Council of the European Union will vote this week on a proposal to review the vehicle technical inspection package, popularly known as the MOT. The current rules date back to 2014, and it was about time to update them as they hardly fit today’s vehicle realities.

More precise methods for emissions and remote sensing inspection

One of the novelties is the inclusion of much more sensitive methods to measure nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and particles (PN). This means the MOT will better detect vehicles trying to cheat emission control systems or those simply malfunctioning.

Additionally, remote sensing will be applied as a voluntary measure. This technology will allow measuring pollutant emissions and noise in public roads without needing to stop the vehicle, a kind of invisible radar for those trying to cheat.

Temporary certificates and advanced digitization

Another interesting change is that European Union citizens will be able to request a temporary technical inspection certificate in a country different from their registration country. This certificate will be valid for six months, during which you’ll have to carry out the definitive inspection in your home country.

There will also be progress in the digitization of certificates, which can be stored in European digital identity wallets, thereby facilitating management and control by authorities and drivers.

Stricter controls to avoid tampering and new obligations

An end to odometer tampering

One of the most talked-about points is the fight against odometer tampering. The regulations will require the creation of national databases where odometer readings made in authorized workshops, manufacturers, and technical inspections will be recorded, making it much harder to sell you a car with a tampered odometer.

Vans under control and maintaining the MOT frequency

Vans will also be included in the road inspection system, with a clear goal: to control at least 10% of these units, especially compared to heavy vehicles. So, if you drive a van, be aware that inspections might be more frequent.

But rest assured, the current inspection frequency will be maintained, and motorcycles could be excluded if alternative road safety measures are applied.

How this affects Spain and the future of the MOT

Time to adapt and digitization

EU member states will have a deadline of three years to transpose this directive, so Spain still has time to see how it is definitively implemented. But the message is clear: the MOT is updating to current technologies.

Opinions from experts and the DGT

Sources from the DGT indicate that these measures could improve the effectiveness of technical inspections and, at the same time, tangibly reduce pollution. On the other hand, some workshops warn that the increased complexity could mean higher costs and more complications for drivers.

But what about you, are you ready for an MOT that not only looks under the car but also inside its electronic intelligence?

The reality is that this regulation revision is another step towards a more exhaustive and technological control of vehicles, where Spain won’t be able to keep relying on its traditional leniency. The MOT will no longer be just wet paper but an inspection that tests even the car’s battery.

Have you ever wondered if your MOT really detects everything going on under the hood?
