COPENHAGEN, May 8 (Reuters) – The king of Denmark has asked Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen to \u200cexplore the formation of a potential centre-right government \u200cfollowing the breakdown of negotiations among centre-left parties, the royal palace \u200bsaid on Friday.<\/p>\n
Denmark’s March election for parliament resulted in a fragmented assembly of 12 parties, with Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen leading negotiations since then, hoping \u200cto secure a third \u2060term in office.<\/p>\n
But Frederiksen’s talks with likely partners reached a stalemate in recent weeks, \u2060slowing down government decision making amid efforts to resolve a crisis in ties with U.S. President Donald Trump’s \u200badministration over \u200bGreenland.<\/p>\n
On Friday, Lars Lokke \u200bRasmussen and his centrist \u200cModerate Party ended talks with Frederiksen and proposed that the task of leading the negotiations should be given to Lund Poulsen, who heads the right-wing Liberal Party.<\/p>\n
If Lund Poulsen succeeds in finding sufficient support from right-wing \u200cand centrist groups, he could \u200bbecome prime minister. If he fails, \u200bthe task of \u200bleading the talks will pass back to \u200cFrederiksen or to one of \u200bthe other party \u200bleaders.<\/p>\n
Frederiksen’s Social Democrats, in power since 2019, won 38 seats in the 179-seat parliament, down from \u200b50 in 2022, \u200cmaking it their worst election result since 1903.<\/p>\n
