“This distrust is one of the major blocking elements to move towards a genuine and highly necessary European Defence Union,” said Wouter Beke, a Belgian MEP from the center-right European People\u2019s Party who sits on the Parliament’s Defence and Security Committee, referring to an EU project to accelerate defense integration.<\/p>\n
The lack of information makes it more difficult for officials and lawmakers to assess how EU programs are being implemented, said German Green MEP Hannah Neumann, also a member of the Parliament’s security committee.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis means we can\u2019t really assess the impact of our funding instruments, as targets and benchmarks lose their significance, and it cuts off part of the basis for democratic oversight in\u00a0defense,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
One response could be that countries would have to share data to continue getting EU defense funding, she said. <\/p>\n
So far there is no Commission effort to make that link \u2014 something that would almost certainly spark strong national resistance.<\/p>\n
