Strawberry Arena in Stockholm was filled with smoke on Sunday after a fire broke out in one of the stands at the stadium. Football players were evacuated while the blaze was dealt with<\/p>\n

A blaze broke out a major football stadium today as the whole arena was forced to evacuate.<\/p>\n

Smoke filled the pitch and arena at Sweden\u2019s national team stadium as AIK hosted Djurgardens at the 50,000-capacity Strawberry Arena in Stockholm on Sunday. The visitors were leading 2-1 after a busy start <\/a>to their Allsvenskan league clash.<\/p>\n

However, with just 25 minutes on the clock, the referee stopped the match as players were told to head off the pitch because of the fire in the stands. It is unclear what caused the fire but it’s possible it was as a result of flares inside the ground. TV cameras cut to the drama <\/a>as fans cleared out of the way as the flames rose up.<\/p>\n

Huge clouds of smoke billowing from the fire across the pitch were seen in dramatic footage and pictures on social media. Emergency services swarmed to the scene and used hoses to control the fire. AIK\u2019s head of security Henrik Koch confirmed the fire was put out without anyone hurt.<\/p>\n

Koch said: \u201cNo injuries occurred and the fire was extinguished.\u201d Djurgardens added a third in first-half injury time and it finished 4-2.<\/p>\n

It comes after German football club FC Schalke have announced that an investigation is underway after a 65-year-old man was found dead at their stadium.<\/p>\n

The man was discovered by a cleaner in the toilets at the VELTINS-Arena. The grim discovery was made during a routine check of the toilet facilities<\/a>, prompting a call to the police. Officers swiftly arrived and sealed off the area as they began their investigation.<\/p>\n

According to German media outlet Bild<\/a>, it’s thought that the man suffered a medical incident before collapsing. Reports also suggest that he had been attending an event at the stadium on Wednesday, only to be found the following day.<\/p>\n

At present, there are no indications of any criminal involvement, although questions are being raised about why no one noticed the man was missing until his body was found the next day. It’s reported that the man was a local resident of Gelsenkirchen.<\/p>\n

In response to the tragic incident, Schalke released a statement: “FC Schalke 04 reacted with great dismay on Thursday to the news that a deceased person was found in a restroom at the VELTINS-Arena.<\/p>\n

“Schalke 04 expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved. The investigation into the circumstances of his death is ongoing, and the club refers inquiries to the responsible police authority.<\/p>\n

“At this time, Schalke 04 will therefore not release any further information. The club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation with all available means.”<\/p>\n
