The formula is simple: smiling staff who seemingly can’t do enough to help, beautiful design, and terrific food and drink.

The backstory
The hotel’s name, Sanders, is derived from Alexander’s – it’s the creation of Alexander Kølpin, a leading Danish ballet star, who after stepping away from his life on the stage decided to rejoin the family hotel business and curate his own property.

The rooms
Incredibly comfortable, with a separate living room and a fireplace. There are several rooms with connecting doors, so you can happily come here as a family and have a shared living space.

Food and drink
The bistro is as much part of the life of the city as it is part of the hotel, with many locals dropping in. The bar is a bit of a fashion scene, but not oppressively so, and the cocktails are mixed with real panache.

The service
It wasn’t just that the concierge was an ever-smiling presence, but everyone else got it: someone heading back to the kitchen would spot an empty coffee cup and take it away.

What’s the neighbourhood scene like?
Close enough to Nyhavn for a beer overlooking the water, near enough to Bredgade to explore all the great design stores, an easy walk to everywhere. To get to the hotel you stroll down a quiet side street close to the Royal Danish Theatre. It feels like a quiet corner of Paris.

Anything else we should know?
There are lovely bicycles that you can borrow – Copenhagen is a wonderful city to bike around.

Set the sceneNever mind hygge – this hotel takes Danish comfort and contentment to new heights.
