One potential site under consideration is Narsarsuaq, a former U.S. base with existing infrastructure.

The talks come after a diplomatic crisis triggered by Donald Trump, who earlier this year said the United States should “own” Greenland to prevent rival powers from gaining influence, suggesting this could happen the “easy way ” or “the hard way”.

Despite the tensions, both sides have continued negotiations through a small working group in Washington. The White House confirmed high-level engagement and expressed optimism, with one official saying discussions were “headed in the right direction.”

Denmark has acknowledged the talks but declined to provide details, stating: “There is an ongoing diplomatic track with the United States. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will not go into further detail at this time.”

Negotiators have explored options that could significantly expand the U.S. footprint under the framework of a 1951 defense agreement, which allows Washington to increase its military presence in Greenland with Danish approval. While no final agreement has been reached, officials say discussions have included the possibility—still under consideration—of designating new bases as U.S. sovereign territory.

The diplomatic effort is being led by senior U.S. State Department official Michael Needham, working with Danish Ambassador Jesper Møller Sørensen and Greenland’s representative Jacob Isbosethsen. The teams have met at least five times since mid-January.

While the U.S. currently operates only one installation in Greenland—Pituffik Space Base—officials see expansion as key to countering growing activity by Russia and China in the Arctic and North Atlantic.

The discussions have largely avoided earlier rhetoric about seizing Greenland, a notion firmly rejected by Denmark and NATO allies. Instead, negotiators are pursuing a compromise that balances U.S. strategic goals with Danish sovereignty concerns.

Still, some officials have questioned the approach. “Why threaten an ally with a military operation or invasion when what you want is something that could be negotiated quite easily?” one former senior U.S. defence official said.

Others defended closer cooperation, warning of strategic risks: “Wherever the US and our allies leave a vacuum, that vacuum is often filled by China and Russia,” said retired General Glen VanHerck.

No final agreement has been reached, and the number and status of potential bases remain under discussion.

By Tamilla Hasanova

The United States and Denmark have been engaged in ongoing negotiations to expand the American military presence in…

[2
2526,2532,2531,27,26,2527,2530,2525,2529,2528,2524
0":"post-80379","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-denmark","8":"tag-analysis-of-azerbaijan","9":"tag-azerbaijan","10":"tag-baku","11":"tag-danmark","12":"tag-denmark","13":"tag-important-news-of-azerbaijan","14":"tag-international-experts","15":"tag-interviews","16":"tag-interviews-with-azerbaijani-analysts","17":"tag-news-from-baku","18":"tag-news-of-azerbaijan
["GET
