While the connections are vast, it\u2019s reductive to keep making comparisons, as the \u201cWet Season\u201d and \u201cIlo Ilo\u201d director\u2019s fifth feature is its own big, beautiful beast of a movie. Watch an exclusive clip in the video above.<\/p>\n<p>The first Singaporean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/film\/\" id=\"auto-tag_film\" data-tag=\"film\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">film<\/a> ever to play in competition at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/festivals\/2026-berlin-film-festival-competition-perspectives-lineups-1235173654\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Berlin Film Festival<\/a>, Chen\u2019s new drama features his perennial star Yeo Yann Yann as Bee Hwa, a beer waitress who marries into a single-fathered family. The patriarch, Boon Kiat (Andi Lim), runs a noodle stand while his son (Koh Jia Ler) is conscripted, so young, into the army \u2014 until a major life twist brings him back to the homestead, and with a new stepmother at the helm. The Singapore-born filmmaker took a hiatus from this trilogy to make the simmering love triangle drama \u201cThe Breaking Ice,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/the-breaking-ice-review-1234865670\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which played Cannes in 2023<\/a>. Chen took on his sole English-language project so far with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/drift-review-cynthia-erivo-1234802486\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2023\u2019s \u201cDrift,\u201d<\/a> starring Cynthia Erivo as a Liberian refugee grappling with her past on a remote Greek island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe Are All Strangers\u201d premieres at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/berlin-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_berlin-film-festival\" data-tag=\"berlin-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Berlin Film Festival<\/a> on February 16; it\u2019s currently seeking U.S. distribution.
