BERLIN, May 12 (Reuters) \u2013 U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla will increase its investment in battery \u200bcell production at its plant \u200coutside Berlin by almost $250 million, boosting its capacity target for the site, the company said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Tesla announced in \u200cDecember \u200binvestments amounting to \u2060almost 1 billion \u2060euros ($1.2 billion) at the site in Gruenheide, south-east of the German capital, as it seeks to \u200bbring battery cell and vehicle production all under one roof \u2060from next year.<\/p>\n
With \u2060the latest investment, Tesla plans \u200bto create the conditions for annual \u200bproduction capacity of 18 gigawatt hours, \u200cup from a previously planned 8 GWh.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ramp-up of battery cell production will also be accompanied \u2060by a significant increase in labour demand,\u201d the company said in a statement, \u2060estimating \u200cits staffing needs in \u2060battery cell production at more \u200bthan \u200c1,500 employees.<\/p>\n
Tesla currently employs \u200balmost 11,000 \u2060people in Gruenheide, the company\u2019s only gigafactory in Europe.<\/p>\n
