According to\u00a0BBC journalists, the United States has been holding closed-door talks with Denmark in\u00a0recent months on\u00a0expanding its military presence in\u00a0Greenland.<\/p>\n
Citing a\u00a0source, the report says the Pentagon plans to\u00a0open three new bases in\u00a0the southern part of\u00a0the island. A\u00a0White House official said Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0administration is\u00a0optimistic about the talks and believes the dialogue is\u00a0moving in\u00a0the right direction.<\/p>\n
The new facilities are expected to\u00a0be\u00a0located in\u00a0southern Greenland. Their main task would be\u00a0to\u00a0monitor Russian and Chinese maritime activity in\u00a0the North Atlantic, particularly in\u00a0the area between Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Danish authorities did not rule out the possibility of\u00a0hosting additional U.S. military sites in\u00a0Greenland. Denmark\u2019s\u00a0Foreign Ministry confirmed that talks with Washington are taking place, but declined to\u00a0disclose details.<\/p>\n
At\u00a0the same time, Trump has repeatedly said Greenland should become part of\u00a0the United States. In\u00a0January, he\u00a0stated plans to\u00a0establish control over the island, citing U.S. national security.
