The United States is in ongoing negotiations with Denmark over expanding its military presence in Greenland, with discussions reportedly including plans for up to three new bases in the strategically important Arctic territory. The talks follow months of diplomatic strain triggered by US President Donald Trump\u2019s earlier remarks suggesting that Washington should control Greenland for security reasons.<\/p>\n

What US Is Reportedly Planning<\/p>\n

Washington is seeking access to three additional military installations in southern Greenland with focus on strengthening surveillance capabilities over Russian and Chinese naval activity in the North Atlantic region, particularly through the GIUK Gap- the strategic maritime corridor between Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom, BBC reported citing people in the know.<\/p>\n

One of the proposed sites includes Narsarsuaq, a location that previously hosted a US base during the Cold War. Other sites are expected to leverage existing infrastructure such as airfields and ports to reduce development time and costs. Some reports suggest the US has even floated the idea that these bases could be designated as American sovereign territory, although no agreement has been reached on that point.<\/p>\n

Current US Presence In Greenland<\/p>\n

At present, the US maintains one operational base in Greenland- Pituffik Space Base- located in the northwest of the island. The base plays a key role in missile warning systems and Arctic surveillance under NATO defence frameworks. Historically, the US had a much larger presence in Greenland during the Cold War, with more than a dozen installations spread across the island.<\/p>\n

Greenland sits at a critical junction between North America and Europe and is increasingly seen as a key frontier in global military strategy. It offers\u00a0early warning coverage for missile defence systems,\u00a0monitoring of Arctic shipping routes,\u00a0surveillance of Russian submarine movement and proximity to North Atlantic air corridors.<\/p>\n
