The segments traveled more than 4,000 nautical miles from Barcelona, Spain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThey came to us from Barcelona, Spain, they\u2019ve traveled over 4,000 nautical miles to be here in Kansas City,\u201d said Lauren Kovarna, associate vice president of marketing at Union Station.<\/p>\n<p>Historic barrier divided city for decades<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Berlin Wall divided the city from 1961 to 1989. East Germany built the wall to keep people from going west. It fell Nov. 9, 1989, paving the way for reunification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe walls stand as a testament to what was division but what is now a symbol of freedom,\u201d Kovarna said. \u201cThe goal of the expedition is that people leave feeling grateful that they live in a country but wanting to go and make the world a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The exhibit brings more than 200 original Cold War artifacts to Union Station. It is the first time this exhibit has been seen in North America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cYou\u2019ll be able to see a desk where kids practiced duck and cover. There\u2019s a gas mask and books on personal and family survival,\u201d Kovarna said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe Berlin Wall: A World Divided\u201d opens May 29 and runs through December.
