It\u2019s one of the largest collections of Madame Gres\u2019 work outside of Paris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/fashion-features\/gallery\/a-look-back-at-madame-gres-1235303255\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Madame Alix Gres<\/a> was one of Paris\u2019 most-celebrated couturi\u00e8res last century. She was known for her signature, sculptural draping and innovative asymmetrical gowns and designed for French cinema. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/designer-luxury\/from-the-archives-gres-matter-1235301859\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Madame Gres<\/a> dressed the likes of Princess Grace of Monaco, Greta Grabo, Marlene Dietrich and Jacqueline Kennedy. The designer, who worked primarily in <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/designer-luxury\/hermes-haute-couture-designer-hire-1238689030\/\" id=\"related_article_link_haute-couture\" data-tag=\"haute-couture\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">haute couture<\/a>, died in 1993 and much of her company\u2019s archive was auctioned off. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBerlin\u2019s KGM obtained the Gres silhouettes from various sources, Katrin Lindemann, the museum\u2019s curator for fashion and textiles, told WWD. Lindemann put the exhibition together along with Christian Mau de la Cerda, a fashion expert from Berlin\u2019s University of Applied Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-wwd-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Mme_Gres_Ausstellungsansicht02_David_vonBecker.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"653\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tA view of the exhibition, \u201cMany Shades of Gres,\u201d in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMany of the looks on display come from a collection of around 1,500 fashion objects and historical costumes from two Swiss collectors, Martin Kamer and Wolfgang Ruf, that the KGM acquired in 2003; Kamer was a costume designer and Ruf ran a gallery trading historical textiles. Alongside hoop skirts and bustle dresses, the collection contained looks from the 20th century\u2019s best-known designers, including Schiaparelli, Chanel, Lanvin, Balenciaga, Balmain and, of course, Madame Gres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe also looked at the provenance of the various [Gres] objects [from the Kamer-Ruf collection],\u201d Lindemann said. \u201cSometimes the only information is that this came from a private individual in New York. Some [of the Gres designs] came from an auction in Paris in 1993, held by Madame Gres\u2019 daughter, who sold off a large part of the company\u2019s archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAppearing alongside the historic looks are dozens of other items, the results of a collaboration between the KGM and students at the city\u2019s University of Applied Sciences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the summer of 2024, the idea of creating work inspired by Madame Gres was presented to professors and students at the university\u2019s school of culture and design, Lindemann said. Over three ensuing semesters, \u201ca wide variety of things emerged,\u201d and not just from fashion students, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAnyone who wanted to could join,\u201d the curator said. \u201cSo, for example, communications designers were involved.
