DENMARK, S.C. (WIS) – Actor, dancer, and Charleston native Woody McClain returned to South Carolina with a message of purpose, perseverance, and faith as he delivered the commencement address at Denmark Technical College. McClain\u2014best known for his role as Cane Tejada in the\u00a0Power\u00a0franchise and for portraying Bobby Brown in\u00a0The New Edition Story\u00a0and\u00a0The Bobby Brown Story\u2014sat down with Billie Jean Shaw for a special edition of\u00a0Awareness\u00a0following his speech. The conversation explored his connection to Denmark Tech, his rise to Hollywood, the importance of HBCUs, and the mindset that continues to push him forward.<\/p>\n
FULL CIRCLE MOMENT AT DENMARK TECH<\/p>\n
Fresh off the commencement stage, McClain reflected on speaking to graduates at a school deeply connected to his own family history. During his speech, he shared that his parents met on the campus of Denmark Tech years before he was born. McClain also spoke passionately about protecting HBCUs, especially at a time when conversations surrounding funding for historically Black colleges and universities continue nationwide.<\/p>\n
He encouraged graduates to stop waiting for validation from others. \u201cStop asking the world permission to be who God called you to be,\u201d McClain told students.<\/p>\n
FROM CHARLESTON TO HOLLYWOOD<\/p>\n
McClain opened up about growing up in Charleston before moving to Florida, and how his upbringing shaped his outlook on life. He discussed the importance of family, culture, and community while reflecting on lessons he learned early in life that still guide him today. The actor also talked about how his Lowcountry roots and Gullah Geechee culture continue to influence who he is\u2014both personally and professionally.<\/p>\n

Before becoming a television star, McClain built his career as a dancer touring with artists including Ginuwine, Jason Derulo, Fifth Harmony, Sevyn Streeter, and eventually Chris Brown. He shared how life on tour prepared him for the entertainment industry and detailed his transition from dancer to actor.<\/p>\n
McClain also reflected on portraying Bobby Brown and starring in the hit\u00a0Power\u00a0series, while candidly discussing overcoming self-doubt and embracing the mentality of always being the underdog.<\/p>\n
